I had tracked Brett down to an old, derelict part of town where he met with his unsavory contacts. Hidden in the darkness, I waited for the moment to present itself. It came when Brett, alone, took a shortcut through an abandoned lot. The crunch of gravel underfoot was the only warning before I stepped out and swung.

The bat connected with a sickening thud, the sound of betrayal and sin being punished. I struck until the struggle ceased and all that was left was the sound of my heavy breaths.

With the deed done, I had to erase the existence of Brett as he lay there, a crumpled testament to my sin. I gathered what was needed—fuel, accelerant—and set the flame. The fire took eagerly to its task, reducing my crime to ashes and soot. As the blaze crackled, the smoke seemed to whisper Her name, intertwining her essence with the night's grim work.

I watched until the flame was too hot to bear, the wind whistled her name like a sweet lullaby. I told myself that She was safe once more from her past, safe from those who would harm her, and safe under my watchful gaze.
