Summary: Just one small change, just one extra attempt to be secure and keep loved ones safe can change everything. It can separate friends, stranding both parties in worlds not their own. Some are left with fear, and the others immediate danger and regret.

Amity turned around just before running through the portal, making sure Luz was still with her. Instead of being with the rest of them, Luz was activating plant glyphs, trying to keep the Titan's head and the portal intact. Vines wrapped around her arms and legs as King was perched on her shoulders. She was straining, but it was working.

"Luz, what are you doing?" Amity cried, the portal flickering behind her.

"I-I have to get Eda. We'll find a way to you!" Luz yelled.

Behind her, the Collector turned and saw what was happening. People were escaping, sure, but his new friend was with them.

"Go! Go, go, go! I-I can't hold the portal much longer!" Luz panicked when she saw King beginning to float away before dropping a vine and grabbing onto him, "King!"

"King! You promised you'd play with me!" The Collector yelled in frustration, "You pinky swore!"

The Collector extended their pinky and lifted it up, pulling King towards them. Luz struggled to continue to hold onto King and keep the portal open. She had tears in her eyes as her body was pulled in all directions. In desperation, Luz wrapped the vine around her arm that held the Head together a few more times, securing it even more. It did work, as the portal stopped flickering but even more strain was put on her body. It felt as if she was in one of the old torture devices that pulled your limbs off.

"Luz!" Amity screamed, seeing her girlfriend's struggle and running towards her, closely followed by the others.

"We gotta stick together. We gotta stick together!" Luz sobbed in sadness, fear, and pain.

After a short pause, with tears in his eyes King gave Luz a soft smile.

"I'm sorry, not this time. But I can keep you safe."

"No!"

"Luz, I'm so happy I had you as a big sister."

King let go of Luz, took a deep inhale, and shouted as hard as he could, hoping to knock Luz and her friends all through the portal. But because of Luz wrapping the vine around her arm for extra security, that's not what happened.

The vines around Luz's ankles snapped from the blast of sound, but the one around her arm didn't. Luz's body was blasted back, her arm still tied up. The force of the head being ripped apart, the right vine, and the yell all combined made Luz's arm get ripped right out. She was thrown to the ground and slid back, but not far enough. Amity and the others only got a moment to be horrified as the wave blasted them through the portal and shut the door behind them.

Luz screamed in agony as she clutched the stump on her shoulder as she bled. King was horrified at what he had done, and filled with guilt as he stranded Luz's friends in an unfamiliar realm without the only human they knew.
