Beep-beep.
The noise awakens me again.
Beep-beep.
I can’t open my eyes, but I can imagine what’s making the noise.
Beep-beep.
The bed moves, and my sister gets up and out from her bottom bunk.
Beep-beep.
The alarm keeps going.
Beep-beep.
She turns it off, then tells me to get up.
Beep-beep.
We have school in an hour and a half.
Beep-beep.
But that’s not her voice.
Beep-beep.
The alarm morphs into a different tone.
Beep-beep.
That’s not my morning alarm.
Beep-beep.
I still can’t open my eyes or move, but I can hear.
Beep-beep.
The muffles of voices blending together.
Beep-beep.
Recongnisable sobs; ones I’ve heard before.
Beep-beep.
Chairs squeak, metal clatters, plastic crinkles.
Beep-beep.
The voices and sobs turn into shouts of desperation and agony.
Beep-beep.
I realize where I am now.
Beep-beep.

Beep-beep.
Come on, I didn’t try so hard for this not to work.
Beep-beep…
Flatline.
