The morning after that long, heavy night, the silence between us didn't break. Jungkook drove me home with both hands gripping the wheel like it was the only thing anchoring him to the world. I stared out the window, trying to calm the whirlwind inside my chest.
When we arrived, he stepped out first, rushing to open the passenger door for me. I hesitated for a second, then stepped out quietly. The air felt colder today, or maybe it was just the tension between us.
Then, just as we reached the gate, Mrs. Foster appeared-walking slowly as always with a basket in her hand. Her kind smile widened when she saw me.
"Lisa, dear! Good morning-" she began, but her words faded when her eyes landed on Jungkook.
She didn't say anything for a long second, her expression frozen mid-smile. I watched her closely, heart pounding. Her gaze didn't falter from Jungkook's face... like she was connecting the dots.
She's noticing it.
My heart started racing, my palms suddenly clammy. But then, the tension in Mrs. Foster's face softened. She smiled again, politely this time, and nodded at Jungkook. "Nice to meet you," she said.
He nodded back respectfully, staying quiet.
Mrs. Foster turned to me and patted my arm gently. "See you around, Lisa." And just like that, she walked away.
I exhaled quietly, trying not to let my nerves show.
There was an awkward pause between us when the gate closed. I kept my eyes on the ground until Jungkook finally broke the silence.
"I'm sorry... for last night," he said softly. "For dragging you to my place like that. I just... I needed to tell you the truth. I didn't want you thinking I was married or living a lie."
I nodded, still not looking at him.
After a moment, I finally glanced up at him. "Thank you... for the explanation," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "But even after everything... your sacrifices, your honesty... I've made up my mind." I swallowed hard. "I don't want you in my life. I just want to be alone."
I knew how cold that must've sounded but it was laced with pain, not hate. A part of me felt like a hypocrite. My heart was breaking as I said it, but I had to choose what's right, not what I feel.
He looked down, his lips pressed tightly together. But when he lifted his gaze again, it was firm.
"I understand," he said quietly. "And I'll respect your choice, Lisa." He took a small step closer, looking at me with those honest eyes. "But I'm not giving up on loving you. I'll stay out of your way if that's what you want, but I won't stop loving you."
