Broken Melodies - NCT DREAM

You owe me sleep
We talked all night and sent today's moon and stars to you.
Seoul to LA

"UCLA? That's a 17 hour time difference Arin!"

...
We left something unfinished
I'll do anything to get back to you, you

"Jeno wait—let's talk about this!"

"Later, okay? I have to go."

Life is but a dream, we got history (I just wanna)
Feel the chemistry,
feel you next to me (you know that I)
Hate this distance

"You didn't even think for a second to ask if I was okay with it? You think I want to do long distance?"

"Well nobody wants it but...I thought you'd at least try..."

'Cause I'm just left here singing
Lonely harmonies, broken melodies

"You okay?" Minjeong asked, wrapping an arm around Arin's shoulders as she noticed the shiny film on her cheeks.

"Yeah I just...didn't see that one coming" She said with a dry chuckle, sniffing a little as she couldn't help but let her tears fall. Aeri passed her a tissue from the napkin dispenser and she patted her cheeks dry with the paper as her ears heard the song sung so beautifully by the guys.

Her watery eyes looked back up at them, seeing Haechan squeeze his eyes shut tightly as he hit the high note so effortlessly. She chuckled lightly, not knowing an asshole like him could hold so much emotion in his voice. The song eventually ended and Mark went on to do the ending sentiment as the crowd applauded them for the sentimenal yet upbeat song.

"Should I go talk to him?" She asked, hyperventilating almost as she took gulps of her cider, keeping her body busy to stop any more tears from spilling out

"Well, the answer isn't gonna be at the bottom of that bottle sweetie" Minjeong chuckled, grabbing the bottle off her hold to slow her down

"I think I'm gonna get some fresh air" She sighed, getting up from her seat and Minjeong nodded, telling her to be safe as she walked out of the bar.

"Arin wait!" A voice called from behind her but it only sped up her footsteps

"Arin please! Let's talk—"

"Now you wanna talk? You didn't want to talk four months ago when I was practically begging-"

"I know..fuck I know just—"

"I didn't hear from you all summer! You didn't even try to reach out to me just once, you didn't even care"

"I did care...I couldn't think about anything else but you—"

"Wow that's amazing, I'm so glad you were thinking of me while you were fucking every other girl in all of Seoul-"

"Please just listen to me! You don't know how much I missed you Rin" he said, eyes softening and she ran her hand through her hair in frustration

"This is so unfair Jeno. You aren't allowed to miss me. Not when you ended it. You didn't want me anymore" she said, looking up as she felt her tears stinging her eyes again

"It wasn't about me not wanting you anymore. I just couldn't do it Rin, one day we were talking about forever and the next day I'm staring at your flight ticket to America...the thought of you leaving me was eating me up alive" he admitted, deciding to say what he should've said to her months ago

"So I left before you could...because for some reason, hurting you seemed easier than getting hurt" he said, scratching the nape of his

"And you had the nerve to accuse me of being selfish?"

"I was a coward. I was an idiot and I'm going to regret that for the rest of my life" he said and she scoffed

"If you were this okay with me getting hurt...did you even love me?" She asked, her voice giving up on her and cracking as she asked the questioning that haunted her all of summer break

"Don't say tha-"

"Did you even fucking love me?!" She cried and he took a step forward to embrace her but she only took two steps back

"Of course I loved you. How could you ask that? What we had was so real...I loved you...I still-"

"Don't Jeno. Don't even try putting that on me right now" She said with a stern voice

"If what we had was so real, if you really loved me, how the fuck could you do that to me?" She asked, wiping the fallen tears from her cheeks as she walked past him. He grabbed her wrist, stopping her in her tracks.

She squeezed her eyes shut as she came to realisation that they were back where they were at the rooftop, back at the same point. And she had a choice, to turn around and make a change, or keep walking and numb her emotions. And she chose the latter, not knowing any better, tearing his grip off her wrist as she continued her harsh steps back into the bar, seeing the girls table no empty as they opted to converse with the boys, trying to get good energy flowing between the two groups regardless of the history.

"Hey, did you guys talk?" Aeri asked, shifting the whole table's attention onto Arin

"Did you guys...get back together?" Mark asked

"Obviously not you idiot!" Minjeong corrected, rolling her eyes at how oblivious the man was to social cues

"No we're...still broken up. Let's talk about something else" She said with a sigh, realising Jeno hadn't joined the group by now and had probably headed straight home

"Actually we were just about to start playing truth or dare" Somi said with a smile

"Yeah Arin, truth or dare?" Jaemin asked with a contagious smile

"Hmm, truth"

"What did you think think of the song?" Jaemin asked with a smile, pulling out a nearby chair for her, sitting her in the space between him and Haechan making the girls almost snicker at the perfect placement

"Oh i loved it! Love drunk energy, aminosyanti-" Arin sang lowly, being cut off by Chenle and Jisung

"Huh?"

"Amino—what?"

"What?"

"You mean, I'm in ocean deep?" Mark asked, annunciating the english words with his Canadian accent making her realise she had heard the lyrics wrong

"Oh." She said, making the group erupt in laughter

"This girl seriously" Mark said, shaking his head at her

"What? I'm Korean" she simply defended

"Ah! You and Haechan are too similar" Mark groaned, making the boys laugh at what seemed to be a reference to an inside joke which Chenle took it upon himself to explain, Jeno now long forgotten about as she forced herself to focus on the present than the past
