A slim, dark-haired girl was walking down a path, a dark blue backpack slung over her shoulder and a handful of books clutched under one arm. The early morning sun was shining brightly on the sidewalk. It streamed in patches on her dark brown hair.
Victoria put a hand up to her forehead in order to stop the sun from hurting her eyes. She blinked three times and stared up at the tall grey structure that loomed in front of her. It was a wide, four-storied building with thick glass windows.
She continued walking on and, when she reached the double doors, shoved them open with a single push and walked inside. Her footsteps echoed on the tile floors as she gazed about her, drinking in the sight. Students milled about in the corridors, leaning on the walls or standing in the middle of the hallway. Lockers were lined up closely on both sides, and they swung open to the right.
A young brown-haired girl pushed through the crowd towards Victoria. "You must be the new girl," she said, holding out her left hand in greeting. "I'm Emmeline Hamilton. Miss Starr, the principal, said for me to collect you."
Victoria shook Emmeline's outstretched hand. "I'm Victoria Maywood. Nice to meet you." She pulled her hand back before gripping her books tighter. "Would you mind showing me around?"
Emmeline grinned. "Not at all." She beckoned for Victoria to follow her and they began walking around the school. Emmeline proceeded to tell Victoria all the rules as well as showing her where the classrooms were.
Victoria nodded along politely and paid attention to the statements and their whereabouts as her new friend talked. She also snuck glances at Emmeline, studying her friend's face.
Emmeline had a crown of straight, brushed light brown hair. A slight bang grew over her forehead and freckles dusted her cheeks and nose. When she smiled her light amber eyes sparkled and her tan skin glowed. She also got off track a little bit, and talked about the latest gossip and and drama, about how she had two little brothers, about how she loved archery... Victoria noticed she got distracted quickly, but she had a good heart.
Emmeline finished rattling on about the world and turned to Victoria. "How old are you?"
"Sixteen. I'm in Grade 10," came the reply.
"Really?" Emmeline gasped. "Me too!" She paused. "Did you move here?"
Victoria nodded. "I just moved here from Myrtle Beach two weeks ago, so it's quite a long way." She grimaced. "These books are getting heavy..."
"Oh, of course! I'll show you where your locker is," Emmeline said. She wandered briskly down the halls and rounded a corner, back at the start where they met. "Just here." She pulled a small silver key out of her pocket and twisted in the lock. Victoria grabbed the door and swung it open. She thrust her backpack inside and packed her books on the shelf.
"It must be almost class time," she remarked. "When does it start?"
Emmeline checked her watch. "It's eight fifty-six and class starts at nine. Four minutes to go. We'd better get to the main hall."
Victoria her large coloured handbag off a hook in her locker, which she'd hung there a few seconds ago. She slid her computer into the bag, along with her pencil case and school books before slinging it over her shoulder. "Let's go."
She slammed her locker shut and rushed down the halls, her hair flying out behind her.
