4x8 "Breaking Point"

Part One

The 118 walked on the airport tarmac, the first scene of our shift today.

"Let me get this collar on and then we can assess the--"

"She is not the real emergency!" One of the workers protested, "Over here!"

Bobby hurried over to a man who was laying on the ground. From my spot, I could just barely makeout something brown lodged into his throat.

"Hen, Chim, need you guys over here now! You three deal with the flight attendant."

I helped wrap the collar around the blonde flight attendant's neck, quietly reassuring her that she would be fine while Eddie checked on her foot.

"Could be an ankle fracture," Eddie reasoned, ridding the woman of her heel, "Can you wiggle yoru toes for me?"

Buck, who had been standing over Eddie and I finally spoke, tilting his head and staring at the man Chim and Hen were helping, "Is it just me, or does this guy look familiar?"

"The guy that we pulled out of the jet engine!" Bobby realized.

"Oh, yeah." Eddie mumbled, looking up, "His job seems more dangerous than ours."

"That's one unlucky guy." I commented.

"You gotta pull through, man." The other worker cried, standing over his friend.

I grabbed the materials to make a splint for the woman, keeping an eye on Buck who continued to look at the others with curiosity glinting in his eyes.

"Okay, breathe in and out." Eddie recited as he lowered the woman's leg into the splint, grabbing some tape from Buck to secure it.

"You got this, okay? You gotta pull through man. I know I give you a hard time, 'cause you love this stupid job, but for real, it's inspiring. I wish I could care for anything as much as you love these bags."

The woman rolled her eyes, a permanent frown across her red lips, "It's all rainbows and unicorns on the ground. Try flying the unfriendly skies."

"You don't know Darell, lady!"

"I'll uh-- get a backboard." I said, standing up and rushing to the ambulance, grabbing a backboard and laying it out near the woman on the floor.

Buck and Eddie lifted her easily up onto the bright board, securing her safely so that she wouldn't fall off using the straps. They then lifted her up and set her down onto a gurney while I helped Bobby lift the man, uncorked, onto one. They were both wheeled to the ambulance in synch, declaring their intentions on quitting their jobs.
