Formal? (A short story)

Chapter 1

Lani was on her way back from the little store a few streets down, when she saw someone getting out of a car parked in front of the tree. It was a boy. A boy she knew. With a little bit of excitement bubbling up, but also a little bit of nervousness, she quickened her pace and when he looked at her, she smiled softly, but put on confused eyes

"Uh hey?"

"Hey Lani" Wesley smiled

"What you doing?" She asked, now standing in front of him

"I came to ask you something"

Lani's eyebrows shot up at this. "You drove, seven hours to ask me something?" She found that so strange.

"Yep" He smiled a little goofy smile.

"This better be good" She shook her head slightly, hiding the joy she felt inside.

Lani hadn't seen this boy in at least two years and the last time they had crossed paths had not been the best moments of her life.

"So," He started "My year 12 formal is in a month and I was wondering if you'd want to go?" He paused "With me. As my date"

She blinked. First, once slowly, then three times, faster. "Uhm. What?" She was sure she didn't hear him correctly

"My formal. You, come, with me" He truncated.

"Well, I, I um-" She stumbled over her words "I'll have to check with my parents and see if I'm free- which I'm sure I am, but, um, come inside. Please" She was still in shock as she lead him into the house announcing who had arrived.

Lani's mum poked her head over the stone bench and when she saw that her daughter wasn't kidding she came around and gave Wesley a big hug. While she did that, Lani put the shopping bag on the bench, and unpacked the contents. 

"What brings you down here?" Her mum asked him

"Well I was driving near by and remembered you guys were here" He turned and winked at Lani, making her heart implode.

"Hey mum. Are we doing anything on the 26th? She asked. That was the date Wesley had mentioned as they walked towards the house. 

"Of this month? I don't think so. That's a Wednesday right?"

"Yeah it is" He pitched in

"Why?" Mum asked, curious

Lani looked over at him, not sure what to answer with, but he didn't even hesitate

"I invited her to my formal"

Her mum's eyes widened as she looked between the two of them, trying to catch on

After a moment she slowly said, "Right"

Lani looked at her mum expecting more but got nothing "So?"

"So what?"

"Can I go?" She pleaded. Her mum looked between them again

"Isn't your's the day after" She said, not asking, but reminding

Lani's mouth opened slightly as she remembered her own formal was on the 27th

"Just excuse us one sec" She told her mum, pulling Wesley away, out the back door.

"Do you want to come to my formal with me?" Lani asked, already knowing the answer.

"What? As your date?" He smirked

"Duh" She rolled her eyes jokingly

"Of course" He smiled, cupping her cheek with one hand.

The two then went back inside and planned out how those days would happened. They decided that Lani would drive up to Wesley's on the 25th, stay at his place that night, go to his formal on the 26th. Sleep again at his place. Drive back to hers on the 27th and do her formal that night. Then he'd somehow get back to his place the next day or day after.
