Yeoreum awoke beside Haru in her bed. The girl was busy scrolling through her messages while Yeoreum adjusted to the light that filtered through the window.
Feeling her movements, Haru turned towards her with a smile. She pushed the hair out of Yeoreum's eyes as she sat up, a friendly gesture that showcased how much they had bonded in one night.
Yeoreum was surprised with how close they'd become over a few drinks and for the first time in her life she truly felt like a different person. She felt normal.
Here, in the middle of nowhere, stuck with an idol and a girl she barely knew but somehow she felt the safest around them. Here there were no rich girl stereotypes being thrown at her, no false assumptions about her and nobody telling her that she was disappointing her father.
Here she had Donghyuck, who despite being remarkably different to her in terms of personality, shared many of the same struggles she did. And now Haru, who was very much like Donghyuck with her personality and humour.
It made Yeoreum realise that she had invested way to much time into the wrong friendships growing up. Constantly being around people like herself, who barely talked unless it was something of value. People who would say one thing to your face but an entirely different thing behind your back. People who refused to see the good in the world.
She realised that by being around Donghyuck, she too had begun to see the world the way he did. Enjoying the little things in life, instead of always focusing on the bigger picture.
She couldn't even recall when she had her last cigarette as the packet remained untouched in the bottom of her bag. She didn't need cigarettes around Donghyuck. He somehow managed to relieve all of her stress himself.
Yeoreum rubbed her eyes, looking back at Haru as she smiled sweetly at Yeoreum. The kind of smile she hadn't ever received from her old friends.
"Good morning, sleepyhead." Haru laughed.
"What time is it?"
"Around eleven am." She answered.
"I usually wake up earlier, I must've been really tired. I hope you weren't too bored being awake by yourself."
Haru shook her head, gesturing to her phone screen. Yeoreum could see she was busy scrolling through her Instagram, filled with various female idols. She giggled recalling how Haru had told them about her huge crush on Ningning, last night.
"Are you hungry?" Yeoreum asked.
"Yeah, a little." Haru answered and Yeoreum got out of bed, dragging her lazy friend out to the kitchen with her.
They looked through the cupboards, eventually deciding to make a traditional hangover soup.
Haejang-guk was one of Yeoreum's favourite things to have after a night of drinking.
She recalled the way she would share the meal with her dad after he had come home from an intense business meeting or the day after a company outing. She had grown up enjoying it with him.Her mind travelled back to the day after she had turned 19 and how her father had made her that same soup, the morning after she had spent her night celebrating with drinks.
- Flashback -
"Yeoreum-ah, don't fall asleep at the table again." He chuckled playfully.
She whined as he nudged her awake, placing the bowl of soup in front of her.
"You certainly had fun last night, didn't you?"
