VERONICA VALDEZ

I haven't seen Theo since he came back from wherever he went that day.
After Enzo walked up the stairs I went to my room and curled up on my bed. The period cramps I had were excruciating and I just wished for my father to return. He had been away for too long, and I couldn't wait to have him back so I could update him on everything that had been happening, or at least rant to him if he already knew. The last time I saw him was at the deatheater meeting, where we obviously didn't talk much.
This all happened yesterday and I haven't seen any of the boys since. Enzo never came back for me and we didn't have dinner. Not that I was even hungry, but it was an exception to a routine I had already been used to and it felt weird.
Another thing that was bugging me was the fact that I haven't been outside since the day I was at the meeting. I missed going outside freely. I missed Alice and I missed Ava. I've grown so tired of only seeing the faces of the boys that were originally supposed to look after me. Not letting me go out in days doesn't sound like good babysitting to me.

"Veronica?"
A voice.
My dad's voice.
I jumped off my bed and ran to the door, opening it in a hurry. I threw myself into a hug with the person I'd been missing so much lately.
"Hi sweetheart," He mumbled into my hair, wrapping his arms around me. "How have you been?"
"Terrible," I complained, burying my head into his jacket. "Well, not terrible but I've missed you so much."
He chuckled and detached me from him, setting me on the ground. "I've missed you too. Have you made friends with any of the boys?"
"Well—"

It took me about thirty minutes to explain everything that had happened, from Theo and my feelings towards him to how he was so cold to me the other day. How Enzo has been so nice to me and how I wanted to go back home.
He sighed as I ended my rant and shook his head slightly. "It sounds like you've had an event-filled week, darling. What about Tom?"
I tilted my head and frowned. He's never asked me about Tom. We barely even talk. "What about him?"
"Are you two friends?" He cleared his throat and stared at me. He had one knee over the other as he sat on my bed, his hands on either side of him.
"I— well, not really. We don't—we don't talk much. Why?"
My dad had a weird glimpse of determination I hadn't seen before. "He seems like a really nice guy, darling, perhaps you should befriend him."
"It's okay, I don't really have to. But about Theo—" I started, getting excited even saying his name but my dad cut me off before I could even begin.
"What is it with this Theo-boy anyways? You should focus on something more important, like homework, sweetie. I know you're a little behind in potions."
"Potions isn't really my thing and it's the summer break. I don't want to waste it in studying, especially on a subject that gives me a hard time already," I complained, expecting him to leave it at that.
"If it's hard you could always ask for help from someone," He countered suggestively.
"Like from who?"
"Me, your mom, Tom, perhaps," he listed. He was being weird and this was making me uncomfortable. I wanted him to support me after a long week, like he usually did, not give me a lecture and turn my feelings for my crush down.
"Why Tom?" I questioned, giving him a moment before answering.
"He's excellent in potions, and just brilliant at school in general. I've heard he's the Head Boy of Slytherin and a prefect, is it true?" He raised his eyebrow.
"Yeah, I guess it is."

The dinner table was full. The same people from the first day I stepped into this house were sitting at it with an empty spot for a plate in front of them. The house elves were in the kitchen, waiting for their master to give them their command.
We were all sitting on the same spot as in the first night wearing either a dress or a suit, as Voldemort had asked a few hours before. I was between Theodore and my father wearing a long black shimmery dress with thin straps that snaked over my slim shoulders. I kept my hands neatly on my lap, letting my eyes occasionally wander around the table, glancing at the people present. They didn't stop to focus at anyone, not until they got to Tom. He had a black suit with a black collared shirt underneath, his hair styled with gel. He was already looking at me and when my eyes met his they refused to look away. His blue eyes looked darker than they really were under the dim candle lighting. The distance between us and the darkness of the room didn't let me catch any details of his face but the way his gaze was plastered on me was as clear as a day.
I wanted to look away, to continue the mindless studying of the people around but I couldn't. His stare had locked me in with no intention of letting go. It was probably the reason I never felt too comfortable around him, his eyes. When they hit and focused on you, you were trapped. Like a mouse.

Voldemort cleared his throat, creating a distraction that allowed me to finally break the intense eye contact with Tom

Voldemort cleared his throat, creating a distraction that allowed me to finally break the intense eye contact with Tom. It was a sign. A sign for the elves to start working like the worthless slaves they were seen as.
I used to feel bad for them when I was younger. No one ever thanked them for their effort and the ones who did were frowned upon. The hierarchy between humans and elves had been made so obvious for decades it felt like a crime to challenge it. So I never did. No one did.
A long line of elves poured in like water from the sink. They were all holding something, a plate, a tray full of food or a fine bottle of wine I wouldn't get to touch.
I leaned back to give the elf space as it set a plate in front of me. It was the appetizer, a soup.
"Zuppa valdostana, miss. Good appetite," the elf bowed and left, making its way back into the kitchen.
I glanced down, looking at the plate. It was a thick soup that had a white, yellowish dressing on top. There was green broccoli peeping under it like the first flowers under the snow at spring.
I turned my head to Theo's plate who had the same dish. It actually looked delicious and when everyone started eating, I grabbed my spoon and took the first bite.
"Is it good?" Theo asked.
I nodded as an answer, happy and kind of surprised that suddenly he was speaking to me again. I turned my head back towards my own plate as one of the elves came to pour me water.
"Meet me outside in the yard after this," Theo whispered into my ear, almost making me choke on my food.

What?
