Mice were common creatures inside the homes of District Nine. A constant reminder of their failure during the rebellion. Originally released by their oppressors as a form of biological weapons, it wasn't uncommon to see their descendant's scurrying...

Shouting. Shouting was the first thing Anona Dagan heard when she gained consciousness. Even if she wanted to open her eyes the darkness still had a firm hold on her body, not making it possible.
"If I find so much as one fucking hormone blocker near her, I will fucking kill every person in this room!" Someone shouted at the top of their lungs, making the child's ears bleed as she tried to determine the voice.
It was older. Male. Nothing like what a tribute inside the arena would have. The grogginess over her subconscious didn't allow Anona to question it before the darkness forced her back to sleep.
The second time she awoke Anona was still feeling a little groggy. The pain from whatever surgeries she endured were still lingering as she let out a whimper to express her suffering.
Though the moment a hand touched her hair the child's whimpers turned into shouts of fright. Flailing around in her bed the girl shouted as the hand came back down and tried to calm her down.
"Shhh, Anona, Anona. Hey, it's okay. It's okay," the person stroked her forehead with their thumb, calming her down. "You're safe. You're safe now."
She didn't feel safe, not yet at least. It took a lot of courage but the feeling of sanctuary didn't come until she opened her eyes, seeing her mentor above.
Her fighting ceased as she stared up at the man, "Mr. Sapher?" Maybe it was the drugs, or the way his body blocked the light, making him glow, but she asked, "Did I die...?"
He softly smiled and knelt down, "No. No, you are very much alive, kid."
The girl, who was hooked up to so many wires pumping fluids and painkillers into her system, could only look at him confused, "Why are you in the arena...? I thought... I thought people couldn't come in."
He continued to stroke her forehead and did his best to make her comfortable. After she stabbed Chanel Anona only stayed conscious for a few moments before passing out due to blood loss. The girl was weak already but this took a drastic toll on her body.
"You're not in the arena anymore, kid," he calmly explained.
She blinked, "I'm... not?"
"Anona, you won," he gently explained, and even if it took a few more times the girl's eyes eventually widened. "I won?"
He nodded and repeated himself as the fat tears she was becoming known for started to form, "I won. I won!" Anona wasn't sure how to feel. The medication was stirring her mind into mush, making her feel a sense of unease.
