Chapter 3

Liam Barron's morning was nothing special, he spent most of the morning getting his butt grounded by his daughter, Skyler. She accused him of checking her phone and deleting the voicemail from that Henderson boy, Cameron. Skyler also shouted at him for not trusting her, still and invading her privacy.

His daughter had threatened to leave for good if he kept this shite up. Of course, her mother, Riona, told him so before this fight and didn't say a single word during the entire yelling match but just sat sipping her morning brew. She gave him a sly smirk daring him to say something to her about her non-involvement.

Then, before he could say another word to his little Skyler, she was out the door with a slam. Liam looked back at his mate and there was, now, a full smile on her face.

"She gets this from you," Liam stated, pointing a finger at the door to his mate.

"True right she does. She knows dung when she smells it," Riona scoffed.

Liam eyed her and growled, but he couldn't stay. He was already late for work, the first time in twenty years. He would have to deal with Riona later this evening. He just left her with her brew.

Liam was the sheriff of Dixon, a comfortable and controllable job. He wore a light grey, three-piece work suit and a pair of Jack Shoes in grey and oxblood. In this town, he was the alpha and most everyone knew it. He stood a good six-foot-three, husky built, strong, green eyes, and a look that put fear in men.

Rarely, could anyone look in his eye for long before quivering and averting their gaze elsewhere. He was fair, just, rough when needed, and true to his word, for the most part. Yet, some thought that they could challenge his authority. He was the law here, and he protected the good people of Dixon, Wyoming.

He needed something strong for the morning he had. He would need to stop by the bar before going in and then get a cup of joe. He messaged his right-hand deputy, Rory, and let her know that he was going to be in later. She replied with a winkie emoji before.

Liam rolled his eyes and got into his GMC truck and started the engine. There was a tap at the window. Liam looked over and saw Riona standing there in her robe. He rolled down the window.

"Aye?"

"I just got a word from Lindsey that Cameron Henderson is back in town," she said smoothly.

"Is he? For how long?"

"You should go ask him. I'm not doing all the work for you today."

She knew he was frustrated and wanted to lash out. Riona liked it, enjoyed it even. Her pheromones were powerful, and Liam growled low with desire. Unfortunately, she just placed a finger under his chin and scratched.

Then, she turned and walked away in her robe, just her robe. How she sauntered, Liam couldn't take his eyes off her until she reached the door, turned to look at him, and went inside.

He smirked and knew his wife had forgiven him, but he would let her know how much trouble she was in later this evening. He needed to get to work. His cell phone suddenly sounded. He picked it up and answered it.

"Liam speaking."

"Boss, we have a situation. You need to head out to Bosch's Ranch. Dave and Jorden are already out there," Rory stated.

"What situation?"

He leaned on the middle consul.

"Lupinotuum pectinem."

"Are you sure about this?"

"There are small signs that..."

"SMALL SIGNS DON'T SAY ANYTHING, RORY!" Liam spat. "Is there one or not!"

"Jorden says there's a body you need to look at and confirm," Rory replied.

"I'm heading out there now," Liam said, spinning the truck out of the driveway and down the road.

"Does anyone else know about this?"

"No."

"Good, then Rory, it is your job to keep it under wraps until I can get a handle on things," Liam snarled and hung up.

This wasn't turning out to be a grand morning at all.
