Thats a massive Womp Womp for me-

TWs: Angst

My feet pounded against the forest floor, spike covered vines threatened to trip me over. The growls of zombies and the creaks of skeletons filled the air. A five year old shouldn't be having to do this. I cried out in pain as an arrow grazed my cheek, but I couldn't stop running.

I heard rustling in the trees above, but that was probably just spiders. I saw a flick of bright green and red wings out of the corner of my eye. "HEY, GET THE KID" A shout came. I froze in my tracks as someone with large rainbow wings landed in front of me. "Hey kiddo, I'm not gonna hurt you okay?"

I could hear the creatures getting closer. "I'm here to help yOU, OKAY WE GO NOW" The person leapt forward and scooped me into his arms, taking off in a powerful flap of his wings. I shut my eyes tight as he maneuvered through the trees.

"OWEN?!" Someone called, "HAVE YA GOT EM" "YEAH" I peeked open my eyes and saw the person with green and red wings flying alongside us. We suddenly changed directions and I closed my eyes again.

Time seemed to speed up as only moments later I was being set on the ground. I opened my eyes and saw a group of four standing in front of me. I squeaked and shrunk backwards. "Don't be scared! We're here to help you" A young girl who looked slightly older than my sister stepped forward.

Two antennae hung lazily from her head, a pair of bee wings attached to her shoulder blades. She looked down at me with warm and friendly eyes. "Friend people?" "We're friend people, lots and lots of friend people" She said reassuringly. Owen knelt down in front of me, "Do you know your name kiddo?"

"River" "That's a very cool name River, I'm Owen, and this is Sunny, the guy back there with the dark blue wings is Tom, and the girl with the green and red wings is Lucile, who totally isn't Sunny's girlfriend"

Lucile sighed, gentle gingery brown hair falling around their bright green eyes. "Owen I will throw you off the side of this balcony" I giggled quietly. "Lucile's a pesky bird" Tom spoke, leaning against the side of the tree house that the balcony was attached to, his wings folded up neatly behind him. Sunny facepalmed, "I'm gonna fight all of you"

"Sunny?" I tugged on the older girl's hand, she turned around before smiling. They crouched down to my level to look me in the eyes. Their hair had been put up in a neat ponytail, and she wore a tight black tank top and cargos.

"Where's Owen?" The boy had become almost a brother to me, flying me around the treehouses, introducing me to the other kids, keeping me safe. "Owen's probably down on the forest floor right now, you can see him when he comes back up" I frowned, "But I miss him" Sunny laughed and sat down, allowing me to curl up in her lap.

"Tom and Lucile are down there too, clearing out mobs to make sure its safe for farmers to collect crops and feed the animals," Sunny explained, "I'm always scared that they'll get hurt, but you just have to trust that they know what their doing" She looked down at me, "Does that make sense?"

"Yea, I wanna wait for Owen though" Sunny laughed, ruffling my soft curls, "Alright then, we can wait"

"-don't think I already know that?!" "He's to young to leave!" "Its his choice!" I rubbed my eyes, sitting up from bed. I could hear Owen and Sunny yelling again. They'd been mad at eachother after I asked if I could leave and keep looking for my family.

Sunny wanted to let me leave, and Owen wanted me to stay. "Sunny please-" Tom started, only to be cut off by Owen yelling again, "I refuse to let him leave, he's what, five?!" I crawled out of bed and shuffled over to the door, peeking through the crack.

I could see Tom trying to break up the argument, while Lucile stood off to the side. I looked at Lucile just as she looked up and we made eye contact. "Uh guys" The two didn't stop yelling. "Guys! Rivers awake..."

The yelling came to a halt and they all turned to look at my door. Owen started towards me but was stopped by Lucile. "Take your screaming match outside, I've got this" The parrot hybrid opened my door enough to slip inside. "River, what are you doing up little fish?" They took my hand and led me back over to my bed.

I climbed up and crossed my legs underneath me. "The yelling woke me up..." I trailed off, "Is it my fault? Is that why they're yelling?"

Luciles expression changed and they ruffled my hair, "No of course not, they just... they wanna keep you safe and do what's best for you, but they can't decide what the right choice is" I nodded slowly.

"They both care about you a whole lot okay? Don't forget that"

<~+~>

"River? Where are you going kiddo?" I turned around, gripping my bag tightly. "I'm going to look for my siblings" Owens face dropped, "W-what? No it's not safe out there! You'll get hurt-"

Tom came up behind the parrot hybrid, "Don't make it any harder for him okay?" "At least let us help you get out of the forest" Lucile said, Sunny's fingers linked with hers. "Oki" Soon enough I was wrapped in Owens arms, soaring high above the treetops.

The wind snatched Owens tears away, though I could still see that he was crying. The moment we landed outside of the thick jungle I threw myself into Owens arms. "Thank you for being my big brother"

I looked at the others, "Thank you all for taking care of me" I was squished into a group hug moments later. "Thank you for giving me a family" I slipped out of the hug, "You know I'll see you again"

I waved before leaping into the cold waters of the river.

But he could never uphold his promise.
