Charlotte Holmes is the only daughter of  Earl Bentley Holmes.

A fine day it was that she was taking a walk around with her butler. She walked over to the lake watching the swans.

"It's no rumors that Duke Carlisle is in love with a commoner." Charlotte overheard some ladies gossiping behind her.

"It is not a rumor, I saw them beside a waterfall while I was roaming in the woods" Another lady spoke.

"What a pity to the Duke's betrothal!"

"I heard that His Grace's betrothal is the only daughter of Earl Holmes."

"I don't know if it's a rumor or not but I heard that Duke Carlisle asked his lover to become his concubine since they cannot be together because of their status"

The ladies behind her kept on gossiping. Charlotte knew that they were talking about her and Duke Carlisle.

She knew that she was the Duke's betrothal ever since she turned 10. However, the Duke was always rude to her and kept maintaining a distance with her even when they were young. Even when she tried to converse with him, he always kept his sentence short and  formal.

The Duke is fair, handsome, tall and have a well built body.

Their parents were friends that they felt that their children would be betrothed.

Without thinking, a tear drop down her cheeks. She knew she was being selfish that she decided to keep him to herself.

Being tired of listening, she left the place and went home.

When she reached her house and walked through the living room.

"If the rumors were true, then we might need to put off the engagement" Charlotte overheard her father speaking to her mother.

"That may be right, but we need to have a talk with Lottie first" Her mother spoke.

"The rumors seems to be true, despite me being not seeing with my own eyes, yet the rumors were everywhere" Charlotte spoke coming out of her hiding. "And I refused to pull off the engagement."

"If that's what you want" Earl Bentley Holmes nodded to his daughter.

Charlotte left the room and went to the library to continue reading her book which was left unfinished reading.

It was common for ladies to spread the rumors and the ladies likes gossiping about the rumors whether it's true or a false rumors.

Charlotte felt a pang in her heart that her future husband would not be able to give her the love she wanted from her future husband. She felt that time changes everything and with time, Duke Carlisle might fall in love with her as they were betrothed.
