Esmeralda POV

"Mate," Carmen said as she ran toward the track team.

I caught up to her and dragged her to behind the bleachers. I put my hand over her mouth to try to calm her down. Nothing was working, and I had only one choice left.

"Enough," I said, extending my aura. I let Arden take the rein as he calmed her wolf down.

Carmen blinked a few times and looked around. My hand was still over her mouth as I made sure she wasn't fighting against me.

"You done?" I said slowly and quietly.

She looked at me and nodded. Her eyes were back to normal, so I slowly took my hand away. We stared at each other for a few minutes until she spoke.

"Mate," she said, gasping for air, "My mate is here."

Her expression showed happiness. Carmen became the alpha of the Darkmoon pack at the age of 15. She spent three years looking for a mate and commanding the most robust pack. Her excitement was far better than how I reacted.

"Carmen, we are with humans. Do not lose control", I said to her.

Since this is Carmen's first time smelling her mate, she only cares about finding and marking her. I wanted to do the same for Allyson, but then fear took over, and I never did. Carmen was sniffing the air, trying to glimpse her scent. If she is here, she must also be on the track team.

"Carmen, listen to me, "I started, "We will go to the bleachers and sit down. We will scan the area and find your mate. But we can not interact until she is alone."

I explained the plan slowly so she knew I wanted her to find her mate. She nodded, and we walked to the bleachers. Her hand was trembling as her eyes scanned the crowd. My eyes found my mate talking to two girls. I was mesmerizing my mate when Carmen tapped on my shoulder violently.

"There," she pointed excitedly, "She is talking to your mate."

I looked back and saw who she was pointing to. It was the girl with brown hair. She was a bit taller than my mate. I chuckled and started to laugh. She looked at me, confused.

"Who knew that our mates knew each other?" I whisper to her.

She chuckles a bit, and we both watch intensely at our mates. After a few more hours, the tryouts were over. We didn't have to try out because we were titled as transfer students, and Coach knew our abilities. "Alright, you girls have done well today," the coach said as she gathered all the girls. Please enjoy the rest of your summer; the results will be available next week. I also want to announce that we have two transfer students that we are taking in. It will not affect the numbers. I am still picking out 12 players."

The Coach explained everything, and with our ability to listen from far away, it was easy to tell she was talking about us. I stared at my mate, who was scanning the bleachers. Her eyes fell on someone a few seats away. I follow her eyes to see a tall guy with brown hair speaking to a girl sitting next to him. I looked back at my mate and saw her reaction, which was adoring. I growled lowly at the guy.

Carmen elbowed me in my side, causing me to hiss. She looks at me and mouths the word stop. Arden was pacing in my head, anxious to know who the guy she was looking at was.

"Does mate have a partner?" Arden said in my head. I tense my jaw, trying not to let my emotions control me.

I glanced back at my mate and saw her eyes scanning the crowd again. Her eyes landed on me, and I could tell she was staring at me. I tilted my hat up a little, hoping she would notice me. Her eyes locked on mine momentarily, and I saw her chest move up and down. Neither one of us pulled away until the girls started to separate. Her eyes left mine, and my wolf whined.

"Come on," let's go see coach real quick before we leave," Carmen said.

We walk down the bleachers and toward the field. It was the only entrance and exit near the locker room, and the girls had to pass us. As we kept walking, I saw my mate coming closer. We both stop to let all the girls pass.

My mate noticed me standing as she got closer. Her eyes never left mine. I held my breath, waiting for her to pass. Arden was howling as her scent grew more assertive. The smell was of a forest scent, a natural. She stood in front of me, staring deep. I tilted my hat to block the eye contact. I was a coward for doing that. Arden was fighting me, trying to take control. I notice a movement of her arm reaching out slowly, lifting my hat. I met her eyes again, and this time, I melted.

"Hi", she spoke. Her voice was soft, angelic.

I will admit the bond is so strong that my heart leaps out of my chest. I could feel my leg giving out as the wind blew her scent toward me. She scouches her brows in confusion. I knew why; I was afraid because she didn't understand why she was as attractive to me as she was.

"What is your name?" she asked.

I couldn't find my voice. I was staring at her eyes, lost in them. I felt my body moving toward hers. She noticed but didn't look away. With the wolf's hearing abilities, I could hear her heart beating fast. My mouth became dry as I stared at her lips. We stood there for what seemed like hours, staring at each other. Carmen elbowed my side, causing me to snap out of the daze.

I blinked and realized where I was. Allyson blinked and looked back at me.

"What is your name?" she asked again, this time more sternly as if demanding that I tell her. My wolf purred at her voice.

"Esmerelda," I said quietly.

"What was it?" she asked, leaning forward.

My heart was beating fast, and I feared she could even hear me.

"Her name is Esmeralda," Carmen said, stepping forward. Thank you, I said in the mindlink.

She looked back at me and smiled. She was about to say something when a male voice called her name.

"Allyson, let's go." It was the same guy she had been looking at earlier. He was tall, somewhere between 5'7 to 5'9. e wasn't as tall as me. He was well-built and dressed plainly.

"Comming", she said. She looked back at me and walked away.

My eyes never left her as she hugged the guy. I tensed my jaw, trying to control my feelings. When I saw them kiss, I let out a growl so deep that I felt the ground shake a little. Carmen grabs my arm, trying to pull me away from the scene. I noticed how everyone was looking around, trying to find the source of the vibration. My heart shattered as my mate left with the guy's arm around her waist.

As soon as she could pull me away, she was frozen. I looked at where she was staring; her mate was talking to Coach.

"Nope," she muttered as she turned away, "I can't do this today. I don't look my best, and I smell awful. I don't have flowers. Does she even like flowers? Would a car be a better gift? Does she like cars? I like cars. Does she like dogs? Am I considered a dog? Is it close to being a dog? What is she allergic to fur? Do I shave my fur?"

She grabs me and uses her wolf speed to disappear into the car. She starts the car and zooms to the house.

And I was supposed to be the coward one, I thought, looking back as the school vanished.
