Elias was a handsome, twenty-eight year old magician living with his grandma who felt he had wasted his whole life studying magic.
He was walking down the busy, noisy street with his bag of potions in his hand and Spark, his most trusted and at this point only friend.
Elias felt hopeless, his magic shop was going to be closed down since he wasn't able to meet up with the rent and had borrowed money from some bad men, at this point he felt like the lamest magician on earth. An electric car zoomed over his head making him fall to the ground, his  potions shattering underneath and the idiots riding the darn thing couldn’t even apologize. Spark gave him a hopeless look and he sighed.

“Don't look at me like that.” He said still on the floor and Spark tinkled.

He stood up and was on his way back to his shop when he saw something that caught his eye. On display was one of the most shiny amulets he had ever seen. He could easily sell it for a good price and probably be able to pay for his rent. He hurried into the store.

“Hey, how much for the amulet?” He asked the lady behind the counter. She shot him a disgusted look.

“Fifty trinkets.” She said and he hurriedly shoved it into her palms.

“Spark, this was such a good deal.” He said shoving the amulet into his coat pockets. Spark couldn't contain his annoyance…… Elias was always buying unnecessary magic items.

                         **********

Elias couldn't help but admire the amulet he had just bought. He stared at it fascinated, wondering how he could activate it. He his magic book and scrolled through it looking for an amulet just like it, it took him a while but he finally found it.
He read aloud to Spark who looked intrigued to find out about the amulet.

“The gold crested amulet is a treasure created many many years ago. It was created by several sorcerers to stabilize the opening and closing of portals.
Although it's powers being exceptionally useful, the amulet could also be extremely powerful and dangerous depending on it's wielder - scary.” Elias paused and the continued to read. “The sorcerers knowing how dangerous the amulet was created it in such a way that the amulet chose you only if you are of pure heart. It picks it's wielder. After reciting and only after reciting the incantations on the back of the amulet can you truly know if you are of pure heart and are able to control the amulet.” Elias turned over the amulet and saw some old scribblings, it wasn't in English but he could translate it. He looked at Spark and Spark stared back.

“Well, it's now or never.” He finally said before reciting the incantations.
After which, nothing happened. He recited it again, and still nothing. He wore the amulet around his neck and laughed.

“Well Spark, I guess I'm not of pure heart.”

The next day, Elias woke up feeling exhausted, he hadn't done much yesterday except stay up all night to watch tv with Spark.

He got dressed and started on his way to his shop again, Spark following every step of the way. He had reached a dark alleyway he passed through every morning which always seemed to make him flinch.
