(___) STUMBLED THROUGH the twilight woods, the gnarled branches of the unknown clawing at her tattered cloak. The air hung heavy with the scent of damp earth and decay, a suffocating blanket that choked her lungs. An oppressive silence pressed down on her, broken only by the mournful hooting of an unseen owl.

Fear, cold and sharp, prickled at her skin. This wasn't her woods, the comforting pines and whispering maples replaced by these twisted, skeletal giants. Where was she? Panic clawed at her throat, a desperate sound that died unheard in the oppressive stillness.

Then, from the depths of the woods, a sound unlike anything she'd ever heard before. A voice, rich and smooth like aged velvet, boomed through the trees, weaving a melancholic melody that sent shivers down her spine. It was a song of loss, of despair, a lament that spoke of forgotten dreams and extinguished hope.

(___) followed the sound, drawn by a morbid curiosity that warred with her primal fear. The trees thinned, revealing a clearing bathed in an sickly, ethereal glow. In the center stood a figure, shrouded in shadow. Tendrils of darkness swirled around him, obscuring his form but hinting at a monstrous size.

"Lost, little one?" The voice wrapped around her, a caress of honeyed tones laced with something sharp and dangerous. (___) took a tentative step back, her voice a choked whisper. "Who... who are you?"

The figure tilted its head, a gesture that seemed to ripple the darkness around him. "A friend," it purred, the word dripping with insincerity. "A guide in this confusing time."

(___) didn't believe him for a second. This being, whoever – or whatever – it was, radiated a cold, malevolent power that sent shivers down her spine. Still, a sliver of morbid curiosity kept her rooted to the spot.

"Where am I?" she asked, her voice barely a croak.

The figure chuckled, a sound like dead leaves skittering across a frozen pond. "A place between worlds," it said, its voice swirling around her like smoke. "A place where the lost wander and the forgotten linger."

A coldness, deeper than the chill of the unknown, seeped into (___)'s heart. This wasn't a dream, not exactly. This place felt real, terrifyingly real.

"And what about you?" she forced the words out, her voice trembling slightly. "Why are you here?"

The figure remained silent for a moment, then spoke in a voice devoid of warmth. "I wait," it said simply. "And you, little (___), will join your brother soon enough."

(___)'s breath hitched. Wirt? What did it mean? Her mind raced, a frantic search for meaning in the cryptic words. But before she could form a question, the world dissolved around her. The clearing, the dark figure, all vanished, replaced by the familiar sight of her bedroom ceiling.
