IT STILL felt difficult to fully grasp. Maura was going to be back with the national team. Ever since her career had begun, she had never felt as impacted as she had when she got her first call-up. Sure, playing a Champions League final was good. Sure, being nominated for the Ballon d'Or was a big thing. But none of those factors were surreal to her. But the fact that she got to play for her country? Wear her country's colors as the Irish people cheered her on?

It was absolutely absurd. But Maura wouldn't have it any other way. It was the reason she'd been as cheerful as she had been when Vera had called her, to let her know that she was going to return as​​ the Captain of Ireland.
