𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰..

I crept down the stairs, drawn by the faint voices drifting up from the kitchen. I wiped away the tears staining my face and took a deep breath before heading downstairs.
I had a feeling Mom had finally arrived home.

As I entered the kitchen, I saw Claudia frantically searching through the grocery bags, probably hoping to find the chocolate bars Dad used to buy.

Ethan, looking completely out of his element, was attempting to stir together some sort of concoction that he insisted was soup. I highly doubted he even knew how to turn on the stove.

Meanwhile, Mom was on the phone, her tone suggesting she was sharing the latest gossip with a friend.

I slouched on the stool at the marble counter, my mind swirling with thoughts as I replayed my conversation with Ariana in my head. "I mean, you're not just going to  your family and leave Jake out of the picture, will you?" she had asked. It hit me like a ton of bricks - Jake was the father of my baby, and I had only just found out.

I couldn't even bring myself to tell my own family yet, so how on earth was I going to tell Jake? The fear of his reaction gnawed at me. "Of course not," I had replied to Ariana, my voice barely above a whisper. "But I'm afraid of how he'll react... What if he pushes me away? Or his family hates it?" I bit my lower lip, the worry etched on my face.

As I sat there, lost in my own thoughts, Claudia's groan snapped me back to reality. "Mom, you didn't buy my favorite chocolate bar," she complained. Mom, who had just gotten off the phone, let out a frustrated scoff. "I thought I told you, Claudia. The store didn't have it."

I could feel the tension rising as they bickered back and forth, completely oblivious to my presence. "Bridgette, why are you just sitting there?" Ethan's deep voice cut through the air, his annoyance evident. "I'm stuck here making dinner because of you." I simply shrugged off his comment, too preoccupied with my own worries to pay him any mind

As the tension in the area grew, I couldn't help but raise my voice in frustration. "Would you two just stop already?!" My words reverberated through the room, causing both my mom and Claudia to turn and look at me in surprise.

"Oh, Bridgette, darling, I didn't even see you there. Your sister was just taking up all my attention," my mom said as she came over and enveloped me in a warm hug. Behind mom, Claudia shot me death glares, causing me to shiver a bit.

I mean, obviously my mom loves me, so I figured she wouldn't be too mad if I told her I was pregnant. Turns out, I was only partially right.

I knew telling them the news would change everything but, I couldn't hide it from them forever.

I ushered them all into the living room, taking a seat across from my mom and Claudia, with Ethan by my side. It was time to finally reveal the truth.

I nervously fidgeted with my fingers,  mustering up the courage to finally spill the beans to my family. I took a deep breath and blurted out the words that had been weighing heavily on my mind.

"Mom, annoying siblings... I have something to tell you," I began, my voice trembling with fear. Mom's concerned gaze met mine, and I could feel my stomach churning with nerves as I struggled to find the right words.

"I'm pregnant," I finally confessed, the words leaving a bitter taste in my mouth. The room fell silent, the weight of my revelation hanging heavy in the air. I could feel the nausea creeping up on me. Not again.. I swear, I had thrown up three times that morning.

Mom gasped, her eyes widening in disbelief. Claudia and Ethan's expressions mirrored her shock as they turned to look at me. Their cold stares sent a shiver down my spine, triggering a wave of nausea that made me put my hand over my mouth as I bolted for the guest bathroom.

A few minutes later, I emerged from the bathroom, feeling unsteady on my feet. Mom stood up and enveloped me in a tight hug, a warm smile spreading across her face. Maybe Ariana was right after all, I thought.

But that moment of peace was short-lived as mom's expression quickly turned to one of anger. "Thanks for telling me, honey, but who did this to you? Who's that goddamn pervert? He should be in prison!" she exclaimed, her voice rising in fury.

I shushed her, "No, mom," I said weakly as I collapsed onto the couch as soon as she let me go. "It was Jake," I continued, my voice shaking.

I could still vividly recall that night. We were both drunk and I was feeling so out of it. Jake led me to the guest room in that house and it just happened. I don't even know how. We were both wasted.

I tried to explain everything to my mom, but she was furious. "You didn't just have premarital sex, but you were drunk too? What if it wasn't consensual? What if you were assaulted?" Mom scolded, her voice filled with concern and anger.

I stayed quiet, not even realizing that Claudia and Ethan were still there. They were still in shock, their mouths hanging open. I couldn't believe Mom was talking to me about this in front of them.

It was so embarrassing, and I just knew Claudia would never let me live it down. Mom sighed when she noticed I couldn't speak and hugged me again. "We'll go through this together, Bridgette," she said softly. "But tell me, does Jake know? Are his parents aware?"

Ugh, there was that question again. I hated it..
