"Henry?" she screamed as he collapsed onto the floor.
Sarah took off his t-shirt and fanned him. He had a broad chest and toned muscles but this was not the time to admire that. She thought hard about what to do when someone passes out. She'd never felt as grateful for all those biology classes as she did now. She decided to apply every single thing she knew about first aid.
CPR took the first spot.
It didn't work.
"Wake up, Henry, wake up," she patted his face as he called out his name in panic. "No, no please don't die on my face."
No response.
Then a dreadful thought crossed her mind.
Was he poisoned?
She had seen him throw up a few minutes ago. Come to think of it, he was a big shot in the business and he would have some people who found him an eyesore. Then, won't she be the first suspect if anything happens to him?
"That can't be true, right?" She was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. "Oh, yes, call an ambulance," she mumbled, grabbing her bag from the sofa and rummaging through it. She fished out her phone and tried to make a call only to realize her battery was dead. She searched for Henry's phone but she couldn't find it.
"Henry please wake up," she begged, "please don't die, okay? I don't want to go to jail."
"What do I do? What do I do?" she paced around the room with her hands on her head, messing up her hair. She had this crying face and her voice sounded like she was about to cry. "Murphy's law happens to me all the time. Of all the possible outcomes in the world, mine had to be the worst."
A light bulb went off in her head. Oh, yes, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. She could help him breathe.
She took a deep breath and pinched his nose, ready to administer mouth-to-mouth breathing.
His eyes popped open and he saw the enlarged version of her lips. He lay on the ground while she was on top of him in a rather awkward position. Her fingers pressed on his nose and he couldn't breathe. He did not know how to react and his mind went blank for a second.
"Do you want to kiss me?" he said the first thing that came to his mind.
His sudden question startled her. She stopped the breath that she was about to administer and it made her cheeks bulge. She opened her eyes slowly, afraid that she was hallucinating. Her eyes met with those charming black eyes that made her heart skip a beat. It was then that she noticed their awkward positions.
"Whew, you are awake!" she heaved a sigh of relief, wiping the sweat off her forehead with the back of her hand. She rolled to the side and patted her chest, "That's fine... that's fine. I've never been this happy to see someone wake up. You nearly scared the hell out of this grandma."
He sat up and clutched his head with both hands, grimacing. "What happened now?"
"I don't know. You threw up suddenly and passed out. I was about to give you a mouth-to-mouth resuscitation when you woke up." She fidgeted with her fingers, resisting the urge to touch his tousled hair. "Are you okay?"
"My head hurts like hell." He struggled to get up and she helped him up. He tried to take her step forward but his legs were too weak to support him. "Help me get to the bed," he said as he leaned on her for more support.
She felt like the whole world had collapsed on her when his weight shifted to her. She dragged her feet as they walked and finally made it to the bed. He slumped into the bed, his legs dangling. She removed his slippers and hoisted his legs on the bed, panting. "Should we go to the hospital?"
"How will we get there with the commotion outside?"
"Yeah, yeah, you are right." She grabbed a handful of her hair as all kinds of thoughts ran through her mind. What should she do now? "What about you call your doctor? All rich people have private doctors, right?"
"No need."
"Then what should we do?" she asked, her voice had a higher pitch than usual because of panic. She ran her hands through her hair, creating a bird's nest.
Henry watched, amused. His heart felt warm and fuzzy from her actions. He could not remember the last time someone showed genuine concern for him. Most of the people around him wanted something from him. They would show concern only when it suited them.
"Open the third drawer on your left. My pills are there."
"You should have said that sooner," she almost shouted as she strode towards the drawer. She shoved the hair out of her face and took out three bottles of pills. "Which one?"
"All of them. Give me one pill each."
She ran to the kitchen and came back with a glass of water. She gave him three pills and helped him sit up. He took the pills from her hand, swallowed them all at once, and gulped half of the water in the glass. Sarah took the glass from his hands and placed it on the mahogany bedside table. She covered him with a quilt and sat beside the bed, afraid to leave him alone. He closed his eyes and soon drifted to a peaceful sleep, or so she thought. She stood up and turned to leave but a hand grabbed her wrist. "Please, don't go."
She turned to face him and her heart almost stopped. Was that fear she saw in his eyes? She shook her head. She must be seeing things now. "Alright." She sat beside him and clasped his hand in hers. "Go ahead and sleep, I'll accompany you."
"Hmm," he grunted and slowly let himself relax. A few minutes later, he drifted off to a deep peaceful sleep – for real this time.
Sarah, perhaps because of exhaustion or the warmth of his hands, fell asleep right beside him.
