Twilight jolted awake, his body reacting before his mind fully registered what was happening. The alarm clock lay smashed on the floor, a casualty of his reflexes. His gaze lingered on it for a moment, a rare slip for the renowned spy. He always woke at 4:29 AM, right before the alarm. Now, at 5:14 AM, he had overslept.
Rubbing the exhaustion from his face, he checked his phone, which displayed multiple messages from his handler, codenamed "The Handler." They were mostly updates regarding the recent terrorist activity in the city. Operation Strixx was becoming more delicate by the day, and any mistake could ruin ages of undercover work.
Twilight sighed deeply, getting up to start his day. He slipped into a t-shirt and loose pants, heading to the bathroom to splash water on his face. His dirty blond hair, normally kept neat, was a messy halo around his head. As he quickly fixed it, pushing his bangs to the side, he allowed himself a moment of reflection.
The mission. The fake family. The delicate balance he was maintaining.
Yor and Anya were still asleep, which gave him some time to clean up the apartment. As he swept, the early morning light filtered through the curtains, bathing the room in a soft, golden glow. It was peaceful, almost too peaceful, but he welcomed it.
Soft footsteps alerted him to someone's presence.
"Yor, good morning," Twilight said, his voice calm, though his sharp eyes quickly assessed her expression. "You're up early today."
Yor, his wife in name only, stood in the doorway, still looking flustered. Her long dark hair was pulled back loosely, and her crimson eyes were slightly wide as she looked at him. "Oh, Loid, good morning. Yes, I have to head to City Hall early today."
Twilight nodded, playing the part of the caring husband. "Of course. Make sure to take care of yourself."
"Could you tell Anya I said good morning?" Yor asked, slipping on her boots. "I'll have to skip breakfast. I'm running late."
Before he could offer her anything to eat, she had already bolted out the door with a hurried "Goodbye!"
Twilight let out a quiet sigh as he watched her leave. He had no time to dwell on her strange behavior. He had his own set of secrets to keep, and his mind was already racing with the details of his next move for Operation Strixx.
Later in the morning, after ensuring Yor had left safely, Twilight turned his attention to the next member of his carefully constructed family. Standing outside Anya's door, he knocked.
"Anya, it's time to get up. You'll be late for school," he called.
Inside, there was a muffled groan, but it was enough of a response for him to continue preparing breakfast. The frying pan sizzled as he cracked eggs into it, the smell soon drawing Bond, the large white dog, to his side, tail wagging.
"Sorry, Bond," Twilight said with a small smile. "These aren't for you."
Suddenly, a loud shout echoed from the other room. "AHHH! I'M LATE!" Anya, his adopted daughter, came racing into the kitchen, half dressed and struggling to put on her school shoes while simultaneously inhaling her breakfast.
"Slow down, you'll choke," Twilight reprimanded gently, hands on his hips as he watched the little pink-haired girl devour her food in record time. She was chaotic, but she was a key part of the mission. Her role in his cover as a family man was crucial, but lately, she had become more than just a pawn to him.
After walking Anya to the bus stop, Twilight returned to the apartment and collapsed onto his bed. The brief moment of peace was short-lived as his phone buzzed, snapping him back into reality.
"Good morning, Twilight," came the cold, measured voice of The Handler. "Or should I say good evening, considering your current state?"
Twilight sat up, instantly alert. "What's the status?"
"A new complication," she said. "You'll need to accelerate your plan. The terrorist network is tightening their grip, and we've received intelligence that could jeopardize your cover if you're not careful. There's no room for mistakes."
Of course, Twilight thought. Another day, another impossible task.
What a hassle.
