dasha sat in her science class, her leg bouncing up and down nervously. she wasn't a big fan of this class, but it was okay. she sat at the edge of the table, matt sitting in the seat next to her. she was trying to focus on the equation in front of her, but she kept zoning out, thinking about her next class.

she hated geography.

when she had geography last year, she hadn't exactly been the best student. she sat next to matt, and the two would just whisper or laugh together for the entire time. if he wasn't there or actually did the work, she would put her airpods in and hum lightly or talk to the boy in front of her.

she was disruptive and, because of that, the teacher grew to hate her. the brunette girl didn't care that much since she'd be moving classes anyway but, when the new year came, she was assigned the same teacher. she still wasn't that fussed - it would just be a repeat of the last year. she'd sit next to matt and talk with him or maybe she'd sit next to the boy in front of her or maybe she'd sit with nea since she was in the class this year.

but none of that happened.

instead, she walked into the class on the first day and was immediately stopped by the teacher.

''dasha.''

''hi, sir.'' she grinned. ''did you miss me over the break?''

''it was very quiet without you-''

''well, i'm back now.''

she tried to step past him, but he stopped her.

''i can see you're back, but the quiet was so nice.'' he explained before a slight pause. ''you're not sitting next to matt this year, dasha.''

''oh.'' she frowned. ''then who?''

''well, we all know you talk to a lot of people in this class.'' he explained. ''but there was one person i didn't see you say a single word to last year.''

''who?'' she asked, genuinely curious to see who he would say.

''chris sturniolo.''

her heart dropped. ''no-''

''yes.'' he said, cutting her off. ''i'm not changing my mind.''

''you have to!'' she pleaded. ''please! let me sit next to matt...i'll be completely silent this year! you won't even know i'm here!''

''i've already assigned somebody else to sit by him.''

''who? make them switch!''

''nea.''

she almost rolled her eyes at her unluckiness. of course her two best friends got to sit next to each other whilst she got stuck sitting next to...him.

''but-''

''no, dasha.'' he said. ''i'm doing this for both of us. i get to have a quiet class and you might actually get some work done this year.''

he didn't wait for her response, just walking back towards his desk. she looked at him for a few moments before turning and scanning the room. her gaze landed on him, and the two made eye contact for a few moments before she pulled her eyes away and walked over to the table.

and that's where she still sat.

sitting next to chris was horrible...and not just because he was her enemy since childhood.
