If there was anything instilled into Paper School students since day one, it was the fear of failure. A singular letter on a paper could ensure you got to live another day, or meet your end to an enraged teacher. It certainly got the message of getting good grades across, since students seldom got anything lower than a C. Unfortunately, some weren't so lucky.

"I'm definitely gonna fail this test.." Abbie whined, placing his head down on the table in front of him. Abbie, Lana, and [Name] currently resided in the library, helping the poor boy study for the upcoming math test. "You'll do fine, I'm sure," Lana reassured, using the hand that wasn't working on a craft to rub his back soothingly. "Yeah, you won't fail," [Name] added.

Abbie let out a sigh, grateful for his friends' words but unsure if they would end up ringing true in the near future. He picked his head back up, ready to continue trying to cram all the mathematical information into his brain. Lana removed her hand from his back, going back to the new hand puppet she was making. [Name] then wrote out another problem onto the already cramped sheet, hoping that he would catch onto the information soon.

While Abbie was interested in learning, the information didn't always stick. [Name] was well aware of this, therefore ensuring they were patient with his shortcomings. It didn't diminish their worry for him, though. They knew how this school worked, and they knew the teachers were ruthless when an F was involved. It only made them want to help the boy more, because they didn't want to end up seeing his blood splattered against a wall all because a math concept wasn't making sense to him.

Sure, they could probably reverse his death with their unnatural ability. But that didn't mean it was ensured, since [Name] had never actually gotten to use it on anything besides small animals. They watched Abbie attempt to work out the problem with a concerned gaze, hoping for nothing more than for him to end up with, at the very least, a C on the nearing test. That grade wouldn't mean that Miss Circle would be happy with him, but it would spare him from her brutality. But as [Name] looked over the problem he was now finished with, they knew it would take the rest of free period before he was even to the point of barely passing. All they could think was, 'This is going to take a while..'

The day after the test, [Name] had noticed the absence of both Abbie and Lana. Their brain instantly switched to the worst case scenario, that Abbie had failed the test, even despite their endless studying of the material. But what they didn't understand was why Lana wasn't there. She had seemed to be doing good when [Name] went over it with her, so there was a low chance of her receiving an F as well.
