2006.
the academy walked out to the courtyard with their umbrellas, covering their heads from the snow as they surrounded ben's coffin.
seventeen-year-old y/n, with her normal face prior to her death, stood in-between the same aged vanya and diego, holding the boy's hand as she cried.
"your father is ready to give the eulogy, children." pogo said as reginald walked up in-between him and grace.
"the world is full of injustice. good people die along with the bad." reginald started, y/n sniffled and squeezed diego's hand as she stared at young ben's picture.
"this cosmic equation will never change unless evil itself is wiped from existence. thankfully, there are powerful forces pushing back against the wicked and iniquitous, individuals who have the strength to pull together against insurmountable odds to face adversity with unblinking courage, and not to hesitate to sacrifice themselves for another."
vanya's breath trembled as y/n shook, close to breaking down once more, which sadly has become normal for her.
"unfortunately, none of you are such people." reginald said as klaus sighed.
"despite years of training and weeks of preparation, you allowed number six to die on this mission." those words made y/n choke out a sob, letting go of diego's hand to cover her mouth.
allison gasped at her father's words, "it wasn't our fault." she said, luther putting a hand on her back.
"excuses? i will not hear them. the umbrella academy has failed one of their own, the consequences of which are dire. hold on to this feeling, children."
klaus sniffled as y/n cried out muffled sobs, everyone had tears streaming down their faces as they looked at the coffin.
"let it fester in your hearts...so there is never a next time." reginald looked at his children, lingering on y/n.
"training will be cancelled today out of respect for your brother. we resume tomorrow at six am." he concluded before walking away, grace and pogo following after him, leaving the remaining six members of the academy.
"it wasn't anybody's fault." vanya said as she looked up at everyone.
"how would you know, vanya? you weren't even on the mission." diego remarked, causing vanya to leave.
"nice going, asshole."
"what? we were all thinking it."
"oh, so you're thinking, diego? that's a first."
"screw you!"
"hey! dad was right. we should've done more. this didn't have to happen." luther, diego, and allison walked off, leaving klaus and y/n.klaus walked over to y/n, putting an arm around her, "come on, sparky." he led the trembling girl over to a small gazebo, closing their umbrellas.
"you're okay." he hugged her, holding her as she sobbed into his chest.
"i just miss him. s-so...so much."
"i know, sparks, i know. i miss him too. how about i try to bring him back?"klaus pulled away a bit and looked down at the girl as she looked up at him, "what?" she sniffled.
"i can probably conjure him if i try hard enough." he smiled.
y/n shook her head, "no, klaus he's gone. probably up in heaven already. just leave him be. he's free and happy now." the girl grabbed her umbrella and opened it, walking away as klaus walked towards her.
