"You never talk." He states.
I gulp as quietly as possible.
"It's okay to talk. I won't hurt you if you do." I open my mouth, but it's as dry as the Sahara. "It's nice outside today. Not too hot for the beginning of May, which is surprising." He grunts. "It's the tenth, by the way." Tears well in my eyes and I can't blink them away, so one falls. "Why the tears?" I swallow. "Go on, tell me."
"It's Will's birthday," I whisper. He heard me just fine, though.
"Will's your boyfriend, right? The one on the lock screen of your phone?" I nod. "Seems like a nice boy. I bet you miss him."
I don't answer. I don't nod. I do nothing but sit still.
"It's okay to miss the people you love, as long as you remember why you can't see them." I feel him lean forward. "You do remember, don't you?"
"Because I'm sick," I say hoarsely. "And I can't risk anyone else being sick either."
"Good girl."
