When Emma looked into the mirror, she saw a sublime and alluring vampire dame. She never imagined she'd see a time where she needed to emphasize her father's heritage, yet here she was, dressed in Jocasta's black and velvet ballgown with her golden hair crowned in a ruby netting. He black feathered mask a subtle nod to her maternal heritage.
"You look beautiful." Emma turned her head to her mother beside her."Thanks." Emma fitted the mask where it was comfortable on her. "I hope I'm not noticed, I've garnered quite the reputation among these provincial vampires."
"That's the best part about a masquerade ball." Amalie fixed her daughter's flowing hair within the net. "Your face is hidden so the world will never find you."
"The world doesn't know I exist." Emma remarked. "At least the world outside of Machecoul. A Nephilim disguised among vampires like a wolf among sheep."
"True, but these sheep have fangs and a keen scent for blood." Amalie stroked a tress of her daughter's hair.
"I've doused myself with enough perfume to choke in it. They won't smell me." Emma assured. "I'm going to be fine. I've been in worse danger than this and I'll be with Vance." When she turned around, she was caught in her mother's firm embrace.
"Be careful, Emmaline." Amalie's voice was heavy.
"I will Mother. I promise." Emma pulled her in.
"Remember this is a recon mission, not a battle. If things turn ugly, get the hell out."
"I know Mom, I will." Emma lowered her chin and kissed Amalie's cheek.
A polite knock on the door interrupted their tender moment. "Madame?" Vance curtsied in full masquerade regalia.
