A few days had passed, and Marinette hadn't even looked at me. After classes, when she would come to our house, she would just stay in Kanami's room. Fuck, I miss her sweet voice...
"KATSUKI!" Kanami's voice shouted from upstairs, making me run up, thinking something had happened.
"What happened!?" I slammed her room door open to see her lying in bed with tissues scattered around and a container that looked like it had...throw up?
"What the heck?" I looked around, trying to make sense of the scene.
"I got sick last night. I can't make it to Uni," she explained weakly.
"Okay?" I raised an eyebrow, still confused.
"Shut up. I need you to pick up Mari. To and from Uni," she instructed.
"Can't. She hates me," I muttered, not wanting to face Marinette's cold shoulder again.
"I don't fucking care. Maybe you both can talk it out or something? Now go," she shooed me away, and I grunted, leaving her room reluctantly.
When it was time to pick up Marinette, I drove to her place, trying to push down the nervousness bubbling up inside me. When I pulled up to her apartment, she came out, her eyes widening in surprise when she saw me in the driver's seat instead of Kanami.
"Hey," she greeted quietly, slipping into the passenger seat.
"Hey," I replied, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Where's Kanami?" she asked, her voice small and hesitant.
"She's sick. Couldn't make it," I explained briefly, avoiding her gaze.
"Oh," she whispered, looking down at her hands.
The drive to her university was painfully awkward. The silence between us was heavy, filled with unspoken words and unresolved tension. I kept stealing glances at her, but she just stared out the window, lost in thought.
When we arrived, she unbuckled her seatbelt and hesitated for a moment before looking at me. "Thanks for the ride," she said softly.
"Yeah, no problem," I mumbled, watching her as she got out of the car and walked towards the entrance of the university.
With a sigh, I drove off to my high school, my mind swirling with frustration and confusion. Why couldn't things just go back to how they were? Why did she have to avoid me like this?
I was leaving school when my phone rang. Kanami's name flashed on the screen, and I picked up.
"Yeah?" I asked into the phone.
"I need you to pick up Mari and take her to the mall," she said urgently.
"Why the fuck?" I asked while getting into the car.
"Because! We made plans to go to the mall because of this sale! I don't want her to miss out just because I can't go! Please! She might even forgive you!"
"...Fine," I sighed and cut the call, heading to the university to pick Marinette up.
When I got there, Marinette hesitantly entered the car and just looked out the window.
"Um...Kanami told me to—"
"Just take me to Kanami," she muttered.
"Kanami said to take you to the mall for the sale—"
"And I said take me to Kanami," she glared at me, making my heart break slightly. She never looked at me like that.
"No. Kanami said to take you to the mall. So that's it." I huffed and started driving towards the mall.
Once we pulled up to the mall, she huffed and didn't move.
"Can you fucking go? Go buy stuff and for Kanami too if you want to—"
"I don't have any money!" she yelled at me.
"What? Where did it fucking go!?"
"I lost my wallet at university..."
"...WHAT THE FUCK!? How can you just let it go!?"
"I don't know! But I told the office and they'll let me know if they find it..."
"By that time someone probably already fucking stole it," I scoffed.
"Shut up," she muttered.
"Fine...here." I grabbed a few bucks from my wallet. "Take it."
"I can't—"
"You can pay me back later. Here, go." I shoved the money in her hand and told her to go. "Call me if you need anything. I'll stay here. Okay? Call me for any emergency or anything."
"Fine," she huffed and hopped out of the car. I watched her leave and enter the mall.
I was sitting in the car, my stomach growling, so I decided to grab something to eat. There was an ice cream place nearby, and I figured that would do for now. As I was ordering my ice cream, my phone rang. It was Marinette.
"Bakugou, hurry and come to this store! Hurry!" she said urgently.
My heart raced. I thought she was hurt, so I ran towards the store she mentioned, ignoring my ice cream.
When I got to the store inside the mall, I found Marinette trying on an outfit. She looked at me with wide eyes.
"What do you think about this?" she asked, twirling a bit.
"What the fuck? You called me for this shit?"
I was annoyed that she called me for this, but as I checked out the outfit, I felt myself blushing from how good she looked in it. I swore under my breath and covered my face to hide my blush.
"It looks... fine," I muttered, trying to play it cool.
Afterward, I went back to the ice cream place to order something for both of us.
When I got back to the car, my phone rang again. This time, Marinette's voice was shaky and scared.
"Bakugou, please... hurry... some man was bothering me and then started touching me... I'm scared," she sobbed into the phone.
My blood boiled. "Stay where you are. I'll be right there," I said, rushing back into the mall.
When I found her, she was trembling, tears streaming down her face. I took her hand gently.
"Go to the car. There's ice cream there. Wait for me," I instructed her. She nodded and walked away quickly.
I scanned the area, looking for the bastard who dared to touch her. When I found him, my rage took over. I grabbed him by the collar and slammed him against the wall.
"You like touching girls who don't want to be touched, huh?" I growled.
"W-What are you talking about, man?" he stammered.
"You're gonna regret it," I said, throwing a punch that landed square on his jaw. He tried to fight back, but I was too angry to feel anything. I kept hitting him until he was on the ground, bloodied and beaten.
Satisfied, I walked back to the car, stopping by a store to pick up some of Marinette's favourite snacks. When I got to the car, she was still crying, clutching her ice cream.
I wiped her tears away gently and kissed her forehead. "I will always protect you, Mari. Always."
She looked up at me, her eyes filled with gratitude and something else I couldn't quite place. "Thank you, Bakugou," she whispered, hugging me tightly.
"Anytime," I replied softly, holding her close.
