chapter one: agent blythe

EVANGELINE BLYTHE HAS ONLY EVER experienced praise in more recent years. Two centuries of being shunned did not prepare the girl for how odd it would feel to have someone actually congratulate her for her work.

When she was successful in catching The Executioner, praise was all she received. She became known as the FBI Academy prodigy, with a large mass murder case closed in under her first month.

It was a huge step up for her after she graduated, with teams of agents wanting her for different cases across America. Evangeline normally would be impartial or shy to all the attention, but deep down she knew she deserved it.

She had caught her sisters killer, she had saved countless of other lives across other cases too, so why shouldn't she be praised?

One man seemed reluctant to work with her however, that man being Jack Crawford. He was on the case of The Executioner, and he had seen just how violent and obsessed she had gotten from being too close.

He couldn't deny her intelligence, and her perseverance — but he knew that also came with irrationality at times too.

It's why it shocked her when she strolled into the BAU, ready to begin more work on the case of another serial killer, only to be referred.

"Jack Crawford?" Evangeline was skeptical, pushing her reading classes to the top of her head as her case file was taken from her.

She stood in Dr Thomas Fraser's office, her superior officer and the man who had given her the most recent case. Now, with one week of deep research into her case, he was appointing her to a new one?

"He specifically asked for you, Agent."

"But— I've been working on this case for over a week, I'm starting to get some real dirt on this guy," she began, pointing to her new file of evidence.

"And I'm sure it will prove very useful, but your work here is done," the older man stated, letting out a defeated sigh as he leaned back in his chair. "Evangeline, my hands are tied. I know you have been working hard, but he's a higher up — there's nothing I can do."

Her harsh gaze softened at that. She could tell he seemed stressed, losing his best agent for another team couldn't have been an easy pill to swallow.

Just as she opened her mouth to speak, a knock at the open door sounded, with Jack Crawford himself stepping forward and into the office. Upon seeing Evangeline, Jack's face lit up slightly. "Agent Blythe, just the woman I was looking for. I believe Dr Frasier told you the news?"

"Yes..." The girl eyed him suspiciously. "But I hope you can understand my confusion, Agent Crawford, at your sudden change of heart to want to work with me."

Jack shrugged. "Well it's simple. I have 7 missing girls and I don't want another. You're highly skilled in kidnappings, you've taken down some large serial killers in your time. And I can see your years on the force has shown a lack in... irresponsibility that you displayed all those years ago. The point of the matter is, I need you, Agent."

Evangeline had to hold back a scoff. Irresponsibility is what he called the broken neck and 3 bullet wounds she had given to the man who murdered her sister.
