It ended the way it started

Life can be nearly poetic, the way things occur in a cycle. Sometimes it's nearly uncanny, how things start and end.

With Abigail, it started with a fight.

A thick layer of snow further dampened the already quiet outdoors. Gusts of wind howled around the children as they threw snowballs at each other, and little Rain found himself being pummeled with them.

A tinkling laughter rang out through the crisp winter air, and Rain looked up to see a little girl around his age, her orange hair standing out against the white snow.

"Got you!" She grinned at him, her smile nearly as blinding as the glaring snow.

Stunned, Rain had hesitated a moment too long and was hit with another snowball. "Ow!"

He'd quickly recovered and ran after the girl, whom he later learned was named Abigail.

Much of Rain's childhood was spent with Abigail, and he'd been surprised when she accepted his offer to date. It wasn't very different from just being friends.  Sometimes they'd just sit in silence, taking comfort in the other's presence.

Abigail's death had hit him like a minecart. He wasn't prepared to experience loss. He'd never thought it would end like this. But it hadn't ended, not really, and that was arguably worse.

He couldn't bring himself to hurt her when they fought in Glacierford. Even though she was on the other side of the war, even though she was trying to kill him, he still loved her.

But it weighed on him. What was she experiencing? Was the Nether horde really evil, if they hadn't hurt Abigail? He couldn't afford these thoughts. He couldn't afford to be distracted. So he left.

It didn't matter if he wouldn't survive the Nether. But he had to do something about it.

He'd been planning to just . . . talk to her. But he'd ended up killing her. And it ended the way it started.
