It was so surreal to see Elvis perform in person, and I was up front near the stage. Once Mr. Webb called "Action!" all I had to do was pretend like I was enjoying the performance and falling completely head over heels for the singer up there. Well, as Dick said, I didn't have to act, and I didn't think these girls had to act, either. What a treat it was for them to see Elvis singing, dancing and playing the guitar in person. We all had only seen it on TV if no one went to a concert.
Those moves he busted out made me blush and the girls in the audience giggle. During the performance, Elvis was looking over to his right a lot, and that was where I was. He caught my gaze several times during the number, and he smiled every time. I didn't want to be vain, but I knew he was looking over at me on purpose. Those blue eyes of his glimmered when he caught mine, and he went on to do the rest of the number.
"Cut!" someone shouted, and everyone clapped. It was probably Mr. Webb, and he shouted to do the number again, then we would go onto the next one, which was "Let Me." How amazing it was to witness this film being created!
Elvis performed the number again, and again, he looked at me a few times. Maybe I should test something. Mr. Webb said that if the girls wanted, they could blow Elvis a kiss during the shot, which would add to the hilarity of them going ga-ga over a married guy. Maybe I would do it.
The rest of the number was performed. I chickened out. Well, there was another number to perform. I looked behind me and saw Mom and Dad still over by that trinket stand, and they waved at me. I gave them a grin, showing them that I was very much enjoying myself, but... I felt nervous. I never blew a kiss at a guy before. Heck, I had never been friends with one before! Violet had told me before that she would sometimes glance at a guy or would finger wave at one just to see they're reaction, to mainly see if they were interested in her. Well, most guys were interested in Violet, but it was just a fun little self-confidence game.
My heart was beating faster. Mr. Webb instructed everyone to do what they were doing before for the next number.
Elvis got close to the girls dancing there in front of the stage, and a couple of them looked around twelve years old or younger. How sweet. He even winked at one of them. Would that be shown on camera? That girl would remember that wink for the rest of her life.
My hands started to tingle since my pulse was going so quickly. He busted out some moves, and there wasn't a moment when he looked over at me. The ending of the number came after he threw out some more moves, wiggling his legs and hips, and then... it ended. My heart dropped. I hoped that the number would be performed again. In show business, I found out, scene could be filmed several times before the director was satisfied. It just depended on how much of a perfectionist the director was.
Mr. Webb came up onto the stage and talked with Elvis for a minute, and Elvis was nodding his head at what he was being told, and he grinned at something. What a smile. If this California heat didn't melt me, that smile would.
"Okay, let's go again!" Mr. Webb hollered, and I grinned. Yes, I would be able to try this! And I wouldn't be a chicken. I practically heard Violet begging me to blow Elvis a kiss. Golly, I wished she was with me. She would give me some support. The same with Alice. I wished both of my best friends were with me right now.
The cameras started rolling again, and Elvis looked over at me a few times, and I did nothing! My heart banged inside of me. I had to do this! Plus, it wasn't healthy for my heart to be going so wildly. For my own health, I needed to do this.
