**Barangay Rizal, Polillo Island**
Brigadier General Otto del Castro, commanding officer of the Eastern Philippine Sea Command and director of the newly established government arsenal on the island, was enjoying a cup of coffee in his office. Standing at over six feet tall, General Otto was a bulky figure, his commanding presence accentuated by his stern face, which was marked with various scars-a testament to his extensive combat experience. His dark hair was graying at the temples, and his deeply tanned skin spoke of years spent in the field under the sun. His eyes, sharp and calculating, reflected both the weight of his responsibilities and the trials he had faced throughout his 23 years of service.
Like many other Filipinos, he was born in Ormoc, Leyte, and was recruited and trained there before becoming an official and eventually being appointed as the commander of the Eastern Philippine Sea Command, or EPSC for short. This special brigade, composed of different branches of the military, especially from the Navy and Air Force, was tasked with guarding and safeguarding the Philippine Sea from potential incursions by other countries. EPSC worked in tandem with the Northern Philippine Command to protect the region.
General Otto's face twitched in annoyance as he tried to complete a report regarding a new batch of ammunition for the Western Army Command. The lack of internet connectivity was hindering his efforts.
With a grunt, he stood from his chair and left his office. He was saluted by his subordinates, and he returned the salutes. Descending the stairs of the headquarters, he finally reached his destination. Knocking twice, a female soldier, who seemed just woken up from her slumber, answered the door.
The woman saluted hurriedly. "G-good morning, General Castro. I-is there anything I can help you with, sir?"
Seeing her still half-asleep, General Otto dismissed it with a wave of his hand and addressed his concern. "It seems our internet connection is not working. I can't report to the Western and Southern Command. Others seem to be facing the same issue. Could you fix it, Lieutenant?"
2nd Lieutenant Francisca Corpuz nodded. "Yes, sir. It might take a while. I need to wake my team; they might be... a little drunk right now, but I'll see what I can do."
General Otto sighed. "Well, it was New Year, so I can't blame them. Go on and regroup with your team. I need the connection restored quickly."
As Otto walked back to his office, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. The usual clarity of his thoughts was clouded, and he couldn't help but wonder if something more than just technical issues was at play.
Meanwhile, across the island, everyone was facing the same issue: no internet connectivity, and mobile phones and TVs had no signals, preventing them from contacting friends and relatives in mainland Luzon. As the day progressed, the people of the island would soon face a startling truth.
