Goodreads notified me that I have reached past the halfway mark of my 100 book reading challenge. Overjoyed, I decided to do a blog on all the good books of 2024. I'm not going to focus on the bad books but if you'd like to know about that, you can head over to my Goodreads and check out all the books i've read this year. Link in my bio.
Here are a couple books that I've already mentioned in previous blogs and hence, won't be be repeating again :
Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone [4.75 stars] by Benjamin Stevenson
King Of Sloth [ 3.75 stars ] by Ana Huang
Why Didn't They Ask Evans [ 4.25 stars ] by Agatha Christie
The Man In The Brown Suit [ 4.25 stars ] by Agatha Christie
The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe [ 4.25 stars ] byOnto the other books that I liked / loved this year :
1. Beach Read (January Read)
My Rating : 3.75 starsTo summarize, this book is about two authors - a romance writer and a literary fiction author - who were former rivals, end up neighbors on a vacation.
I've heard a lot of people call Emily Henry's books as generic, white people romance. So, I was not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. Surprising, I know.
2. Assistant To The Villain (January Read)
My Rating : 4.75 starsTo summarize, this book is about how a smart girl ends up working for the misunderstood villain of the kingdom.
Guys, you NEED to check this book out. It's incredibly well-written, well done Grumpy X Sunshine and features the most adorable male lead ever. READ IT!
3. Welcome To Hyunnam-Dong Bookshop (January Read)
My Rating : 4.0 stars
To summarize, this book is about various people and their lives but mainly about how the female lead decides to leave and close chapters to open new ones.
This is the kind of book you pick up when you're at an all-time low in your life or you've been feeling anxious or stressed out. The whole point of this book is to heal and it does that very well. Bonus, it's about books!
4. The Very Secret Society Of Irregular Witches (February Read)
My Rating : 4.25 starsTo summarize, this book is about a secret witch who lands up in a house with three children who have magical powers and guides them into responsibly using their powers. She also happens to find her own family in the house and fall in love.
This was the cutest read of 2024. Sangu Mandanna, a debut POC author, has written such a beautiful and brilliant book. Do read this story, folks. It's highly recommended.
5. Tall, Grumpy, Royal (April Read)
My Rating : 4.25 starsTo summarize, this book is set in a fictional world where countries are rules by monarchies. It's about a princess, whose parents have passed away and whose brother seems to dislike her, falling in love with a prince of another kingdom, who possesses his own fair share of struggles.
I was NOT expecting to fall in love with this book the way I did. Since it's a royal romance of sorts, I was expecting conspiracy, complications and lots of angst. I was dead wrong. This book is actually pretty light-hearted, with a little too much smut, but it's a pretty great read.
6. As You Like It (May Read)
My Rating : 3.75 starsShakespeare! This is my first Shakespeare read (of my entire life) and I have mixed feelings about it. The play started out great and progressed even better. I loved the banter between the jester and the two princesses (?) / the two noble girl cousins. It's so clever. But it ends up in such an abrupt way that I was caught off-guard and had to double check with other editions of the same, in case I missed a few pages. Nevertheless, Shakespeare is always highly recommended from me.
7. The American Roommate Experiment (July Read)
My Rating : 3.75 stars
To summarize, this book is about Rosie and Lucas, her best friend's cousin brother, who end up working out a living arrangement as roommates and go on date experiments.
I did not enjoy this as much as it's predecessor but I did really like Rosie, as a character, as well as Lucas (boy is sunshine himself). I also really loved their dynamic but the novel just didn't completely click with me.
8. Much Ado About Nothing (July Read)
My Rating : 3.95 starsAnother Shakespeare read. This one was infinitely better than As You Like It, in terms of how it ended. I loved the banter and quarrels of the Beatrice and Benedick. They're basically Elizabeth and Darcy but with more impolite jabs at each other.
9. Rules For Rule Breaking (July Read)
My Rating : 4.75 stars
To summarize, this book is about two 'frenemy' teenagers going on a road trip to check out various universities and end up falling in love along it
I can't believe a YA romance has such a chokehold on me but this one manages to accomplish the impossible. It's the debut work by author, Talia Tucker, and it's phenomenal. Do give it a read if you get your hands on it.
10. Partners In Crime (August Read)
My Rating : 4.75 stars
To summarize, this is about a young couple trying to roleplay as a famous, classic detective while they act as the boss and secretary, respectively, of a detective agency.
This was SO GOOD. The Tommy and Tuppence novel I had read earlier this month hadn't impressed me much so I didn't have much expectations going into this. It was pretty well-written with episodal chapters and short mysteries. Also, I fucking love Tuppence. She's an icon.
So, that's all the books for this blog. This year, I also happened to encounter some cute C-dramas and if you know me, you know I love me a good C-drama.
1. Everyone Loves Me
Just get through the first few episodes of the female lead chasing after the male lead. It becomes pretty well developed after that.
2. Love me, Love my voice
The best light-hearted drama of this year. Take your time with this one and watch it slowly. It's extremely well executed drama.
3. Amidst A Snowstorm Of Love
Fun fact, the drama above and this one are both adaptations of novels written by the same author - Mo Bao Fei Bao. This one was extremely cute as well. It was also very light-hearted and a subtle inspiration for my ongoing work - 'Right As Rain'.
4. The Best Day Of My Life
Starring the best friend of the female lead in 'When I Fly Towards You', this drama is one I've been catching up with recently. It's also extremely light-hearted without much drama or angst. If you have time, give it a try.
That's all for this blog. Do drop a vote if you liked this chapter. Any and all types of engagement is very much appreciated. Hope you've been enjoying this blog series as much as I have. Sending love, Adelaide x
