Chapter 4:
The bustling corridors of Riverstone High were alive with chatter as students prepared for the upcoming spring festival, but all Clara could think about was the chaos of the cafeteria and her not-so-secret life as a witch. Desperate to share her experience and seek some understanding, she called Mia and Liam over for a meeting at their usual spot—the shady courtyard just behind the bleachers.
"Okay, I'm here," Mia said, her curly hair bouncing as she plopped down beside Clara. "What's with the serious face? You look like you've been hiding from a bear."
Clara chuckled nervously and glanced around. "I need to tell you guys something... something big."
Liam, lounging against a nearby tree with an eyebrow raised, leaned in closer. "What's the deal? You didn't get expelled for that glitter explosion at lunch, did you?"
"No, it's about the spell I tried," Clara said, her heartbeat quickening as she recalled the events. "I'm... I'm a witch."
Mia's eyes widened, and Liam almost fell over from surprise. Then, as if a switch had been flipped, their expressions morphed from shock to excitement.
"You're kidding!" Mia exclaimed, clapping her hands. "Like, real spells and cauldrons and everything?"
"Wait—what about the twinkling confetti?" Liam asked, his voice brimming with fascination. "Does that mean you can do stuff like that on command?"
Clara felt her chest swell with a mix of pride and anxiety. "I didn't mean for it to happen like that. I was trying to cast a charm to get Ethan to notice me, but it... backfired spectacularly."
"Backfired?! That's amazing! What happened?" Mia's eyes sparkled with mischief, while Liam seemed to bask in the thrill of adventure.
Clara recounted the story, her voice growing more animated as she described Ethan's confusion and their shared moment. Yet, with each word, an undertone of worry crept into her heart. "But it also made me realize that this magic could end up causing a lot of trouble," she admitted, biting her lip. "I don't want to hurt anyone or make enemies."
Mia's excitement dulled for a moment as she considered this. "You're right. If you're not careful, people might get hurt or... I don't know, freak out?" She glanced toward the main building. "What if someone sees you practicing or something?"
"Yeah..." Clara said, her earlier thrill tangled with worry. "I'm still new to this, and I have a lot to learn."
"It's totally cool that you want to explore your powers, Clara, but we've got your back," Liam said, giving her a reassuring smile. "Just promise us you'll be careful."
"I promise," Clara replied, feeling bolstered by their support.
But as they continued their conversation, Kate Matthews—Riverstone's reigning queen bee—sauntered past, her sharp eyes narrowing when they landed on Clara. Kate was used to being the center of attention, and she didn't like that Clara had stolen even a fraction of it in the cafeteria.
"Hey there, witch," Kate sneered, glancing at Mia and Liam with disdain. "What's happening here? Plotting some dark magic?" Her voice dripped with sarcasm, followed by a snicker from her entourage—Kelsey and Jade, two of her equally popular friends.
Clara felt heat rise to her cheeks, and for a second, she could hardly find her voice. "We're just hanging out, Kate."
Kate stepped closer, her expression shifting into one of feigned curiosity mixed with malice. "I saw that little display in the cafeteria. Got your witchy powers under control? Or do I need to call a priest?"
"Just leave me alone, Kate," Clara replied, trying to sound more confident than she felt.
"Maybe I should investigate this witchcraft of yours further," Kate said, leaning in conspiratorially. "I'd hate for you to become an accidental hazard in our lovely little school."
As she walked away, Kelsey and Jade laughed behind her, and tension filled the air. Clara felt a knot tighten in her stomach. The last thing she needed was for a girl like Kate—with her followers and huge social influence—to turn her newfound abilities into a scandal. She risked exposure just by being near her.
"Great," Clara said, exhaling shakily. "Now I have a jealous queen bee to deal with on top of everything else."
Mia frowned, her features etched with concern. "We can't let her ruin this for you, Clara. She's probably just looking for a way to make your life miserable."
Liam nodded in agreement. "Stay on your guard, Clara. If she has even a hint that you're different, she'll try to expose you. We have to come up with a plan."
Clara felt the weight of her powers pressing down on her, and the pressure to keep her secret felt heavier than before. She could sense that the road ahead would be filled with challenges, and the thought of navigating both the world of witchcraft and high school drama was daunting.
As they brainstormed ideas to ward off Kate's suspicions, Clara resolved to embrace her powers while keeping her head down. But deep inside, she understood that even with the support of her friends, this new life would test her in ways she couldn't yet imagine.
With the spring festival approaching, Clara knew her journey was just beginning, and she couldn't shake off the feeling that things were about to get a lot more complicated.
