The day of the PK Academy school festival had arrived, and the air buzzed with excitement. Students milled about, carrying boxes, decorations, and various items for their class booths. As I stepped into the classroom, I was greeted by the sight of my classmates setting up our display. The theme was "Unique Rocks," and everyone had been tasked with bringing in a rock with an unusual shape or interesting backstory. It was a simple yet intriguing concept, one that had sparked a surprising amount of enthusiasm among the students.
I placed my contribution—a rock shaped like a star—on the display table. It wasn't anything extraordinary, but it seemed to catch a few people's attention. "Nice one, Y/N," Kaido commented as he carefully set down a geode, its crystal interior shimmering under the classroom lights.
Nendo, ever the wildcard, had somehow acquired a small statue, claiming it was his "rock." I couldn't help but chuckle at his interpretation of the assignment. Meanwhile, Saiki placed a perfectly ordinary rock among the collection, clearly uninterested in the whole affair.
Teruhashi entered the room with her usual grace, carrying a rock shaped like a delicate rose. Yumehara followed, holding one in the shape of a broken heart. Kuboyasu's contribution was the most alarming—a rock covered in what looked like dried blood. The room fell silent as he placed it on the table, his expression unreadable.
Hairo, ever the enthusiastic leader, thanked everyone for their efforts. His rock, unsurprisingly, was in the shape of a tennis racket. 'Only he could find a rock like that,' Saiki commented, causing me to smile.
Hairo then announced that the class with the best display would win a reward, which seemed to rally everyone's spirits even more. "Class 3 rules!" Hairo cheered, and the room echoed with the chorus of "Yeah!" from everyone—except Saiki, of course, who merely shrugged.
Saiki and I's initial plan for the festival was to explore it together, but that quickly changed. Kaido and Nendo, with their usual lack of subtlety, invited themselves into our group. Kaido, being the "Jet-Black Wings," seemed excited to "protect" us from the festival's various activities, while Nendo just wanted to hang out. Before we knew it, Kaido had invited Kuboyasu to join us too. It seemed our little duo had expanded into a full-fledged group outing.
Nendo led us to the school pageant, which was held outside. We watched for a while, but the novelty wore off quickly. We decided to head back inside, where the real festival action was happening.
The hallways were lined with different booths, with each class putting their best foot forward. "A haunted house, a cafe, a haunted house, a cafe..." Nendo listed off the choices with excitement. "Wow! So many choices!" His voice carried genuine enthusiasm, as if he'd never seen such an array of options before.
"Define 'so many'" Saiki's asked, which made me stifle a giggle.
Kaido suggested we try out one of the haunted house booths, but Nendo was insistent on eating first. He led us to a haunted house cafe booth, but we quickly vetoed the idea. None of us wanted to eat while being surrounded by ghosts. Just as we were about to leave, we overheard two older guys from another school complaining about how boring the haunted houses were. They looked like troublemakers, the type who came to these events just to cause chaos.
The blonde one suggested they go through the haunted houses and mess them up and they quickly disappeared into another booth.
'Those suckers won't see what hit 'em.' Was the last thought I heard from Kuboyasu as he followed the two troublemakers into the haunted house. He quickly grumbled at us to go on without him as he rolled up his sleeves.
A moment later, the sound of screams erupted from the haunted house, along with the sounds of somebody's fist meeting somebody else's face. Nendo, oblivious to the real cause of the noise, said, "Whoa! Just listen to those screams; that one must be good!" I could almost hear Saiki's eye roll as he commented, "Good place to get beat up."
