ANOTHER ASSHOLE

EMERSON DID WHAT EMERSON DID BEST: SHE PUT HER HEAD DOWN.

After the brief interrogation by Derek and the three spectating students he managed to convince into getting the bite, he had let her walk. She trekked home in the dark, far before Hannah was even due to get home after her lengthy shift, and bolted her window shut that very same night.

She was officially on Derek's radar, and that wasn't a good thing. Four other werewolves knew about her, about the unbridled power she wielded, and the last thing she needed was more people figuring her out, too.

So, she put her head down, opting to focus her attention on the more mundane, human things going on in her life— like soccer.

The look on Angie Laurence's face that Monday after school was priceless; it was a mix of shock and utter anguish when she was once again shuffled into a substitute position during their varsity team meeting. And happily, just like Emerson had discussed with their coach only a few hours prior, the Avery girl would be holding onto her attacking midfield position.

"No hard feelings, right Ang?" she asked, immediately cornering the girl once they were dismissed. Her words were innocent, but her sly little smile could've rivalled Angie's own from the week before when she'd been a little too overconfident.

Angie tossed her a sneer, shoving past her on her way out of the girl's locker room. Her teammates were clapping her on the back, eager to start the season in just two weeks time with their captain. If it all went well, they'd be at the state championships in no time, especially with the increase of talent coming in from two new players.

Exiting the locker room with a cheery smile on her face, she was met with the sight of Elizabeth leaning against the adjacent wall in the hallway. Emerson knew she'd been coming from a debate meeting, the pair already agreeing to drive home with one another. "I'm assuming it went well?" she asked her blonde friend. "I saw Angie crying on her way out, so..."

"She was?" Emerson asked giddily, only to clear her throat at a pointed look Elizabeth tossed her way. "I mean— awh, she was? Poor thing..."

"You're so evil," Elizabeth giggled, and it made the other girl burst out into a fit of laughter.

"Balance has been restored," Emerson sighed happily. "Angie's on the bench, right where she belongs, and I'm still wearing the number ten. I'm a happy, happy girl."

Elizabeth nodded along as they began their walk toward the parking lot. "It's gonna look great on your transcript, that's for sure."

The blonde girl only made a sound of discontent, the looming threat of college now entering her mind. Everyone knew that Emerson had soccer scholarships lined up across the country, but what everyone didn't know was that she never intended to accept a single one. Not even the Miller girl knew of her friend's post grad plans— plans that Emerson kept close to her chest.

"You know I don't like talking about it," she grumbled out, and that earned a subtle eye roll from her friend.

"I know, but it's still a fact," Elizabeth responded with ease, always undeterred by the girl's not so subtle deflections. "One you know is true, too."

And yeah, Emerson did know that it would look great on a transcript. If her life had been a little different, perhaps she'd be on her way to an Ivy League somewhere on the East Coast, or even the Midwest.

Yet, she also knew that her life would consist of running until she couldn't anymore. Not that Elizabeth Miller needed to concern herself with any of that, though.

She was too good to be wrapped up in the life of Emerson Avery, and the blonde herself would never subject her to anything other than peace.

Despite Isaac being back in school, being dismissed from all charges that pointed to him killing his father, it was Emerson's turn to flake on the boy.

Part of it was because she wanted to give him a taste of his own medicine, but the other part was because she suddenly wanted nothing to do with him nor his affiliation to Derek. The Hales themselves were like a bad omen, and give Peter's incredible track record, she knew his nephew would follow suit.

Nothing good ever happened to the Hales, and Emerson Avery already had enough bad luck in her life as it is. She didn't need to worry about anything other than staying alive.

She didn't think it would bite her in the ass, considering it seemed like he had much more pressing issues to tend to as a newly turned werewolf, and she sure as shit didn't think he'd confront her about it the day after they were supposed to meet.

The blonde girl was at her locker, idly sifting through some history notes that she wanted to go over during lunch, when she heard footsteps stop on the other side of the locker door.

Craning her head, she saw Isaac leaning against the neighbouring locker, something akin to a frown on his face. "You didn't show.

Emerson hummed, resuming what she had just been doing. "Was busy."

It was a piss poor excuse, she knew that, but she hoped it would ward off the Lahey boy until she could figure something out. She wanted him to succeed, she really did, but Derek had gone and utterly complicated things.

Hell, if she had gone to meet Isaac last night, she probably would've seen the boy's Alpha sitting at the damn table with them to try and convince her to join them.

Yeah, fat chance.

Isaac's eyes narrowed in her peripheral, something she tried to ignore until he spoke up in an accusatory tone. "You're avoiding me, and I don't like it."

"Isaac, I really don't have time for this," she sighed out, slamming her locker shut as she held her notes in her grasp. "I don't think it's gonna work out. I can set you up with a different tutor, this boy Wally in my section has an even better grade than I d—"

"Are you jealous that I have a pack, is that it? Is that why you suddenly don't have time?"

Emerson found herself stilling, her cheek pulled between her teeth to stop herself from emitting any kind of unnecessary noise.

I have a pack and you don't. He might as well have just said that from the start, in that little taunting voice she'd never heard from him before.

She looked at him, then— really looked at him. He was smirking at her, like he'd cracked some type of code and was immensely content in doing so. That alone made her angrier than ever, the papers in her hand crumpling in her white knuckle grip.

"You used to be a nice kid... but now you're just another asshole in a leather jacket."
