LIAR LIAR
THE FIRST THING SHE FELT WAS SOMETHING COLD AGAINST HER FOREHEAD.
Emerson didn't like the feeling behind her closed eyelids, swatting at the sensation with her hand before she peeled her eyes open. Squinting at the sudden brightness, her head lulled to the side of the couch she was evidently situated on, and immediately locked eyes with her guardian.
Hannah Prescott looked less than thrilled, clad in civvies and holding a wet towel in her grasp. Emerson was wholly and utterly confused.
"Wh—"
"Elizabeth called me a few hours ago," Hannah interrupted, and the stress lines at her forehead seemed deeper all of the sudden. "Said you weren't picking up your phone, so she tracked your cell. Said she'd found you unconscious near the interstate."
Emerson sat up, feeling drowsier than normal. Her memories surged back to life, and she remembered the last face she saw that belonged to a strawberry blonde that she went to school with.
At her silence, and it was more like a mental deliberation of the events that had played out, Hannah sighed. "You need to tell me what's been going on."
"Derek Hale's been singlehandedly ruining my life, that's what's been going on."
The Prescott woman's face twisted into one of disbelief, and Emerson had half a mind to laugh at the emotions flashing across her face. "What do you mean Derek Hale?"
"I mean Derek turned Isaac Lahey into his beta, and after he sent the kid to school the literal day after, I had to pick up the pieces," she grumbled, only to see a look reprimand form on her guardian's face. "Which in my defence yes, that was real stupid of me, but I couldn't have left him there. He would've killed someone!"
An exasperated sigh left the blonde woman. "Why does it sound like your involvement with him doesn't end there?"
"Because it doesn't?" she offered up meekly, and Hannah began rubbing at her temple. "I was just with him, helping him control the three of them when this girl from school shows up and blows powder in my damn face."
Hannah shook her head. "Emerson, how many people know?"
The girl swallowed nervously. "Including you or excluding you?"
"The fact that you even have to ask that worries me beyond belief," she all but groaned. "It's not like you to be this reckless. You of all people know the risks, know of what could happen if..."
If the bad man stumbled upon her while she was unsuspecting, yeah, she knew.
She knew the risks, knew them well. Gaining attention while posing as a human was a grey area that she tended to lurk within, but her true nature was now out in the open, and she'd suddenly gone from just Isaac knowing to Derek and his betas knowing now too. Though it didn't seem like many, the latest events showed just how a secret could spiral out of control.
You could swear the masses to utter secrecy and there would always be at least one person to betray you. Emerson knew this.
Another beat of silence passed between them before the blonde girl cleared her throat. "You said Elizabeth found me?"
"You better give her a call," Hannah only said, a smile of sympathy on her face, "tell her what you can, alright?"
Emerson looked at her hands, mindlessly counting her fingers like she was still stuck in a dream.
Once she got to ten, she gave the woman an answer.
"I really hate lying to her, Han."
"I know, honey. I know."

The Miller girl had picked up after the third ring, and Emerson could barely get a word out before she was being chastised from the other end.
"I was seconds away from having a stroke, Emerson Jade! Seconds!"
Emerson had the sudden urge to scream, to scream that Jade wasn't even her middle name, but she simply bit her tongue. She couldn't do that to Elizabeth. "I'm sorry."
"Sorry? What, you're apologizing for having what I can only assume was a medical emergency?" Elizabeth asked in bewilderment. "I should be the one who's sorry; it took me ages to figure out how the Find my iPhone crap works."
Emerson smiled at her friends antics. "We're two very un-tech savvy individuals, if you really think about it," she joked, leaning against the back of the couch
At the heaved sigh from the other end of the line, she could imagine the girl's frown. "You gave me a real fright, Em. Maybe if I had gotten there sooner, I—"
"Don't even think like that," Emerson almost snapped, and at that point she knew the effects of the full moon and the strange powder were still affecting her. She'd never snap at the girl, but—
Emerson felt immensely guilty for a multitude of reasons, all of the sudden. Elizabeth was arguably the closest thing she'd ever have to a best friend, and yet their friendship was built on the endless lies the Avery girl told. She kept telling herself it was to protect her own skin, but overtime, it was to protect Elizabeth and Hannah and the countless others she'd ever lied to.
"I'm sorry," was all she could say back, and in her gut she knew she meant it. "I've been dealing with a lot and I guess— I guess the stress just got to me. Han's got me on electrolytes, so..."
Her friend's concern bled into her tone. "Are you sure you're alright, Em?"
No, no she wasn't because everything was utterly fucked now. She wouldn't take it back, wouldn't take back the help she gave Isaac, but the wrench it had thrown in her carefully crafted human facade was irreparable.
"Yeah, I'll be fine. No need to worry about little old me, yeah?"
She was a goddamn liar.
