After meeting his beloved, whom he had longed to see, Yu Zhi had to start thinking about how to protect himself during the long process of growing up. If his frail body were to be injured and he ended up coughing blood or shortening his lifespan because of a few playful hits from Mu Yunli, he wouldn't even have a place to cry.
As for keeping his distance from Mu Yunli and, like in the original plot, acting like a stranger with no connection, that was never an option he considered.
After being brought back to the Prime Minister's residence, Song Yajun, still feeling uneasy, said to the Prime Minister's wife, "Mother, Changsheng is weak, and the general's young son is naturally strong. If he accidentally hurts Changsheng, what should we do?"
Ever since this son was born, she had been worried. The doctor had said that the premature birth had harmed his body, and she might find it difficult to have more children in the future. If anything were to happen to Changsheng, her husband could always take a concubine or divorce her and remarry, but she would have to return to her family, with little hope for her future.
So, when it came to who cared most about this child, it was undoubtedly her. She was unwilling to let him face even the slightest danger.
The Prime Minister's wife, aware of how much she valued the child, explained, "Maids are watching over them; what could possibly happen? It's precisely because Changsheng is weak that we must plan for his future."
With her grandson's health in such a state, it was uncertain whether he could even participate in the imperial exams in the future. And even if he could, obtaining a title and becoming an official was a strenuous task. Without a strong body, his official career would be difficult. Personal connections had to be nurtured from a young age to build meaningful bonds.
As she had said earlier, there were no other young children in the family. The children of the servants could accompany her grandson, but they were servants, and their status differed. It would not be appropriate to treat them too closely or too distantly. The general's young son was a perfect match in terms of age and status.
Seeing her mother-in-law's determination, Song Yajun could only say, "But Changsheng is still too young. I'm afraid he'll suffer, and it's hard for children this young to speak up. Perhaps it would be better to wait until they're a bit older before letting them play together often?"
The Prime Minister's wife, despite her intentions, also feared that something might happen to her grandson. She had noticed how the Mu family's child, whenever he got close to her grandson, would cause the boy to shrink away. This made her feel less certain about her plans.
"Let's just observe for a while longer."
Yu Zhi closed his eyes and pretended to sleep. Just like in the original plot, the initial idea was to let both children grow up a bit before allowing Mu Yunli to get close, once he could better control his strength.
But as time passed, Mu Yunli didn't like the frail and sickly original protagonist, and the original protagonist didn't like the boisterous, strong Mu Yunli. The two children quarreled a few times, and eventually, the adults stopped letting them be together, and they gradually grew apart, ending up as strangers.
Now, Yu Zhi would certainly not allow them to end up on that path.
Just as he was contemplating using his advantage as a toddler to secure more time together for himself and his beloved, his beloved took the initiative first.
