Emerson sat in the waiting room with her hands intertwined in front of her as she leaned forward. The air around her felt colder and colder by the minute and yet she could barely feel how cold her hands were. Emerson couldn't even bare to let herself worry or even wonder about anything else than Jay.

As soon as Jay was pulled out of surgery, Will came straight to the waiting room. He announced it to Emerson and brought her to his room. She waited through the night for him to wake up, impatiently tapping her foot on the floor. Emerson sat next to him, tightly holding onto his hand and refusing to let go.

Right when he started stirring awake, a doctor came by to check on him. Jay was still pretty groggy and confused but he eventually fully regained consciousness. Emerson felt a weight being lifted off her shoulders, finally allowing her eyes to take him in. His hair was disheveled and his face cleaned up from the blood that had previously been dripping down. Her heart beat loudly in her chest as she finally let herself relax.

Once the doctor left, Emerson stepped forward with watery eyes. "How are you feeling?" She asked, lightly pressing one of her hands to the side of his face - careful not to hurt him.

"Like I was asleep for a year." He answered, his voice a lot more hoarse than usual. Jay physically felt like he had been run over by a train. But as soon as his eyes found Emerson's, it was like the pain completely went away. When Angela shot him, his only fear was that he'd never get to see Emerson again.

She chuckled lightly at his words, holding back her tears. "You needed a little rest."

"Baby." He paused to swallow, "You know I hate hospitals."

"I do." She answered, amused by him bringing it up. Truth was, she was just glad that he was talking to her. Emerson was more than happy to hear his voice and even happier to hear him joke - being true to himself.

"You gotta get me out of here."

Emerson shook her head, smiling at him. "It's not optional, no." She was glad he was cracking jokes, because she was pretty damn near a mental breakdown.

Shuffling coming from behind them brought their focus to Voight walking inside the room, stopping next to Emerson. "How's the shoulder?"

"It feels like I'll be flying a little crooked for a while." Jay answered his Sergeant, squeezing Emerson's hand lightly.

"Well, I talked to Will and he said no structural damage, so you got lucky."

Jay shrugged lightly, "I guess you could call it that." He took a deep breath, glancing between the two of them, "How's Angela doing?"

Emerson's breath got caught in her throat at Jay's words. As much as she wanted to think that it didn't matter, that he shouldn't even ask because she almost killed him - she also knew that wasn't Jay. And that was precisely one of the reasons why she fell for him.
