On March 3, 1969 the United States Navy established an elite school for the top one percent of its pilots. Its purpose was to teach the lost art of aerial combat and to ensure that the handful of men and women who graduated were the best fighter pilots in the world.

They succeeded.

Today, the Navy calls it Fighter Weapons School. The flyers call it:

TOP GUN

EMILY MITCHELL ALWAYS loved the stars. Since she was a kid her favourite thing to do was to fly at night with her father on one of the small planes he had in their big garage, or just laying in the garden outside their house to watch the stars.

Her father was Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell, a great pilot and he had always been basically her idol, who she inspired to be when she was older. And it was the same for her brother, Logan Mitchell.

The two were twins, but they didn't look very alike. While Emily resembled more their father's features, Logan looked more like their mother, Charlotte 'Charlie' Blackwood. Logan had taken his blonde hair and his ocean blue eyes from their mother, while Emily had taken her brown hair and her bluish green eyes from their father.

Their parents were never married or an actual couple but when Charlie found out she was pregnant Pete stayed. After just losing his RIO and best friend Nick 'Goose' Bradshaw, he was more than happy to find out that he was becoming a father. After the two twins were born, though, Charlie and Pete realised that they weren't meant to be together and parted ways, but still remained friends. So, Charlie finally took the job she was offered years earlier in Washington.

Emily and Logan spent most of their time with their father. Don't get them wrong, they loved their mother, especially Logan since he was basically momma's boy, but they had a special connection with their father. Emily was the one, though, that shared more things with him. She was just as stubborn and troublemaker as he was while Logan resembled more their mother's calm temper.
