Returning to a life more dramatic and stressful than one could ever imagine had most definitely exhausted the female Salvatore, both physically and mentally. Granted that a day away from such a life had been most refreshing, it could not keep her nightmarish terrors at bay.

The most recent hallucination she had the previous night alerted the Original brothers with her pounding heart. They presumed she had a dreadful nightmare and tried to soothe her into a peaceful sleep. While she appreciated their efforts, she'd never admit that it was all in vain.

Their long flight back to Mystic Falls had been nothing but silence, which gave her more than enough time to wander in her thoughts. She was already coming to the conclusion that both Elijah and Klaus knew just how awful her hallucinations were, yet their concerns remained unspoken in fear that she'd lose her temper in such a vulnerable situation. Like a precious china doll, they didn't want the cracks of her sanity to break entirely.

Then there were these illusions—killing the volleyball coach, blood covering the villa's bathroom, a distorted reflection of herself—that took away her sense of reality. All of it seemed so real that she began to question if everything else had ever happened.

Was she stuck in a continuous loop of her Ripper phase without even the slightest awareness, with every peaceful moment as nothing but a dream? What if she had never left her ruthless tendencies since its beginning in 1863?

She wanted to think nothing of it and instead focus on the matter of retrieving the cure for immortality. The two Originals and the Salvatore successfully procured the Hunter's Sword—courtesy of Katrina's feline familiar—and kept it hidden until further notice. With Connor out of the picture, they needed to figure out another way for the Hunter's Mark to grow. Jeremy, as a potential hunter, could offer some assistance, but he needed to kill enough vampires for the mark to complete the map.

She wished for one uneventful day when she didn't need to cease her activities for the benefit of someone else. Wedding preparations were still on her mind, yet the effects of her link to Elena—specifically the hallucinations—had a force strong enough to deprive her of such wishful thinking.

Ebony and Comet remained beside her as she was lying on her queen-sized bed in the boarding house. The cat was curled up next to her, trying to provide a sense of comfort as Katrina stroked her fur. And the stag-as noble as a king of the forest-protectively stood like a shield, warding off the slightest ounce of evil with his presence. However, as strange as it was, the Salvatore couldn't find the urge to sleep. Usually, the presence of her familiars was enough to tranquilize her whenever Elijah wasn't with her, but the hallucinations frightened her too greatly to feel any sort of comfort.
