If there was one thing I was certain about, it was my unconditional love for Elijah. Whether it was the lingering effect of Athena's spell or the anticipated excitement of the wedding, my feelings for him changed to something that was purely ethereal, an otherworldly sensation that I couldn't decipher. It was something that had no beginning and no end; it was simply there.

At first, I had no understanding of the bond we now share . . . of the power behind it. There was once a time I thought the bond to be problematic, especially with the nosebleeds and the near-death experience. What an unforgivable thought to have ever appeared in my mind, because now, I couldn't bear to part from it.

Athena's words regarding our unpreventable separation have left me shaken to my very core. Granted that it wasn't for eternity, the thought of spending a mere moment without Elijah drove me to insanity. And after the incident at the water fountain, surely he felt the same way, perhaps a little cautious to never tear his gaze away from me.

We cherished our bond just as much as we cherished each other, which was what I needed to believe that we would be all right. We were stronger together, and no enemy of ours could ever destroy an unstoppable pair.

The holiday season had passed by in a blur, welcoming the world into a new year. Snow remained in some areas of Virginia, one of them being the Gilberts' lake house. The ground—save for a few spots—was covered in snow, and the surrounding lake had completely frozen over, courtesy of Artemis' magic.

Despite the chilly temperatures, Katrina thought it to be a decent day to continue Jeremy's training and hope for a better outcome. The last time she assisted with his training, the Salvatore used her magic as a way to provoke him, just as she did with Alaric and his alter ego, but it didn't work on the young Gilbert boy. So, she needed to use her enhanced abilities as a vampire to get some kind of reaction from him.

"All right, go ahead," Jeremy said to Matt. "Make a move."

"I drove up here to be your wingman, not kick your ass," the Donovan boy pointed out before his friend flipped him over. "Okay, I get it, I get it. You're a badass."
