Dylan
Dylan sat on one of the benches, waiting for EJ to arrive. Earlier, when he heard EJ's voice, he wanted to shout for joy and tell him how much he missed him, but he knew he had to do what was best for the boy he loves, even if it meant ending things with him.
He wanted to fight, he really did, but something happened to his family in the last few days that he was sure was because of this. His father was suddenly fired from his job without a valid reason, but Dylan was sure EJ's parents had something to do with it because his father claimed he saw them exiting his boss's office inside the restaurant that he was working at.
Right now, both his parents were taking small catering jobs to make ends meet. Dylan also had to ask for more shifts at Mr. Freeze, even working after classes to help his parents. If loving EJ meant that his parents were going to suffer then there was only one way for this all to end...even if it means breaking up with EJ.
Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes, remembering the things EJ's parents had said during that meeting at Mrs. Araw's office. Their words had stuck with him and it hurt.
Maybe they were right? Because of me, EJ had to leave and be homeschooled. Because of me, EJ's future is ruined....
He adjusted his Mr. Freeze uniform and stared out at the dark horizon. I have to do this, even if it hurts both of us...
"Dylan!"
Dylan whipped around and saw EJ running towards him with a big smile on his face. He stood up, and within seconds, felt EJ's arms around him, pulling him into a tight hug. He couldn't help himself and wrapped his arms around EJ's waist, pulling him closer and nuzzling his face into the crook of his boyfriend's neck, smelling that slight apricot and vanilla body wash that always seemed to linger on EJ's skin. He tried to bite back his tears because he knew this was probably the last time that he'd be able to do this.
He just wanted to stay in this embrace and live in this moment with EJ forever. "I missed you so much, Dylan," he heard EJ whisper in his ear.
Dylan couldn't answer him. He wanted to, but he couldn't anymore because he knew that if he did, he wouldn't be able to do what he needed to do.
He pulled away slightly, looking into EJ's eyes. "EJ, I—I have to tell you something."
His boyfriend's eyes were twinkling under the stars, a whisper of a beautiful dimpled smile making what Dylan was about to say even harder. He turned away.
EJ gently placed two fingers on Dylan's chin, making him look back. He swallowed hard when he saw that Dylan was beginning to cry. "
"Why are you crying?" he asked worriedly.
"EJ, let's—let's break up."
EJ's eyes widened. His smile going slack. It was as if his entire world came crashing down with those words. His lips began quivering as he swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing up and down.
"What—what do you mean by that, Dylan?" EJ's voice was tremulous and sad. "I—I asked to meet here because I wanted to be with you and to tell you how much I love you..." A lone tear escaped his right eye, he wiped his cheek using the palm of his hand. "...why are you breaking up with me?"
Dylan wrenched away from EJ, turning his back to him. "Because we are not meant for each other."
EJ walked to Dylan and made him look at him by grabbing him by the shoulders and turning him around. "How are we not meant for each other?"
