Adventures in Babysitting

"Who's this?" Dean asked.

I moved closer to Dean, leaning up to hear the voice of the girl on the other end. "Sam told me to call if I didn't hear anything back from him," she said.

"What did the voicemail say?" I asked quietly.

"Vetala," Dean mouthed to me.

______

"Did Sam tell you where he was going?" Krissy Chambers was 13 or 14, if I had to guess. She had dark hair pulled back into a ponytail and a blue flannel over a gray t-shirt. She led us into her apartment.

"That's what I'm trying to figure out. What did you tell him?" Dean asked

"Uh, he checked my dad's room," Krissy explained.

"There?" Dean pointed down the hall. She nodded her head. Dean headed that way, flicking on the light as we all stepped inside.

The room was seemingly normal. A bed, a desk with a photo or two atop it and not much else.

Dean turned around. "Look, I really don't have time to hold your hand here."

"What are you saying?" Krissy asked.

"Dean," I said quietly. "Be nice."

"Go wait in the living room," Dean told her, shooting me a look. "Your dad may not want you to know every single thing about him."

Krissy leaned against the doorframe and placed a hand on her hip.

Dean rolled his eyes and pulled open the doors to the closet. He clicked on the light, shoving clothes aside to find only the corner of a map tacked onto the wall.

"Crap," I mumbled.

"Where is it?" Dean asked.

"You mean everything about the job my dad was working?" Krissy asked.

"Sam said you didn't know."

"Sam seemed competent so I figured fine, I'll do what my dad always tells me to," Krissy explained. "Be a regular kid, don't say anything, stay out of the line of fire. Let the adults work it out. So much for that."

Dean sighed, rubbing his eyes. "Okay, hand it over," he said. "I have had a long, long week."

"Dean, can we not snap at the children, please?" I asked.

Krissy pulled a gun from behind her back.

"Really? Don't snap at the children?" Dean asked. "Alright, I get it. You're a tough kid. But I'm trying to get Sam and your dad back."

"My dad left, and he didn't come back," Krissy said. "Sam left, he didn't come back. I give you the info, you leave, you don't come back."

"I will drag him back kicking and screaming if I have to," I told her.

"We're coming back," Dean assured her softly.

"I'm coming with you," Krissy stated, leaving no room for argument.

"No. No." Dean shook his head. "Hell no."

"I'm coming. Or you're not going."

Dean scoffed before snatching the gun from her hand.

"Ow," Krissy said.

"Now hand it over," Dean demanded, voice firm.

"I can't. I burned it."

"Oh, okay, well, then...Yeah, I don't know," I sighed.

"You what?" Dean asked.

"But lucky for you, I memorized it all first," Krissy told us.
