"You know this won't end well, right?" The words cut through the haze of her thoughts like a knife, but Evin forced herself to push them away. The tight knot in her stomach twisted harder, but she couldn't afford to feel it now. Later, she promised herself. Later, when everything falls apart.
"He doesn't care," she whispered under her breath, but the lie tasted bitter on her tongue. And he kissed her again. Her pulse quickened as she leaned in, pressing her lips against his, desperate to feel something, anything, that might numb the chaos inside. But the cold truth settled like a weight in her chest: this wasn't what she wanted, and it wasn't going to make her forget.

The screen of her laptop bathed her in a soft glow as she sat on her bed in the pitch-dark room. Wrapped in her blanket, she scrolled throughGoogle, searching for material for her history presentation on nationalism in Germany. Just as she found a promising page and was about to dive in, her phone vibrated. "Hey." Asher.
A smirk crept onto her face. The flickering light from her laptop highlighted her sharp features. Since the school year had started a few weeks ago,Asher had been acting different. He was chasing after her, trying toget her attention—not just privately, but in front of his friends too. What was between them wasn't something anyone else really understood. Some people called it a love-hate relationship, others an emotional dependency. Evin couldn't argue with that. They had been at the same school since elementary, but this wasn't some typical love story where they instantly connected and stayed together forever. No, it was the opposite. They were known for teasing, fighting, breaking each other's hearts, and then, when nobody expected it, making out at a party.
While everyone thought Evin had feelings for Asher, he was always good at making it look like she didn't matter to him. Whenever things were going well between them, whenever there was a vibe, he would turn on the indifference like a switch.
Even thought hey were both popular, they lived in two completely different worlds. Evin had a pretty simple life, while Asher lived on the outskirts of town in one of the richest and most beautiful neighborhoods. But it wasn't his privileged life that made him so irresistible to Evin. Deep down, while everyone else was snickering, she knew there was a connection. They were like magnets—drawn to each other but constantly pushing apart. She was the fire, burning bright, and he was the ice, cold and impenetrable.
