DAYS WERE DULL, and the nights hurt. as if living with a deadly disease didn't kill her enough, a break-up is what really took the cake. all aubrey ever wanted was love in her unstable life. she felt it was the only thing that kept her in control and truly away from spiralling.

but it was harshly ripped away from her that one horrible day—the day when aubrey lost everything.

she had walked in on the heinous action, arriving with a full heart and leaving with tears and a broken spirit. but deep down, she knew why he had done it; it was because she was sick, and nobody stayed around for sick people.

it hurt her so badly, she had cut off love forever and reserved it only for her friends and family.

she never wanted to be in love again.

"connie!" aubrey swatted her older brother, conrad's, shoulder as she reached up for her phone. he laughed at her feeble attempts and held it higher. she shot him a glare and latched her hand onto his arm, pulling it down with a harsh tug.

to no surprise, he remained victor and caught her wrist, shoving it away and sticking his tongue out at her. when she tried again, a cough built up in her weak lungs, diverting her attention away from retrieving her phone.

conrad immediately stepped back and lowered his arm as he watched her turn the other way and cough into her elbow. concern overcame him and his hand shot out to rest on her shoulder. "woah, hey, you okay?"

aubrey caught her breath and cleared her throat. nodding, she seized the moment to snatch her phone out of his grasp, which he didn't object to; even walking up a hill made her lose her breath.
