After Castiel and Maeve return to Earth, the four inseparables move as much as possible from town to town, from motel to motel, stealing car after car and trying to follow the least predictable route in case anyone-be it an angel or a demon-attempts to track them down. They make sure to carry with them every symbol and charm that could help repel supernatural creatures, better hiding their traces. So far, it seems to work, as they encounter no problems on their journey, whether from Heaven, Hell, or any other place in this universe. During their flight, the two brothers regularly call Bobby, who takes the opportunity to update them on Bunny and inform them of anything strange that might interest them.
Castiel and Maeve take advantage of these moments, difficult and exhausting as they are, to grow closer to one another. They seem now closer than ever, and to see them, one would think they have always known each other; this pleases both Sam and Dean, who see happiness in Maeve's eyes and in her father's.
However, Castiel has to leave the trio about two days ago after receiving a call from Bobby informing them that he might have a lead on the whole affair. The problem is that the sources he finds are in Enochian, and so Castiel is the only one who can decipher everything. They decide to part ways for a few days. Before leaving, Castiel reassures the boys: if they have a problem, Maeve can teleport them all to Bobby's. Yes, he is absolutely certain his daughter is capable of that. Thus, with relative calm, Dean and Sam let Maeve's father leave Colorado for South Dakota, leaving the three of them behind. The next day, Bobby sends Sam, Dean, and Maeve on another lead near Denver, in a small town called Franktown, not far from where they had been before.
Now, after a day of driving, Sam, Dean, and Maeve arrive in Franktown, hoping to find a solid lead for the next step in this strange adventure. But before entering the old warehouse Bobby pointed out over the phone, Sam stops and puts an arm across Maeve's body to urge her to do the same. She turns to him, brow furrowed, just like Dean.
"Little brother?"
"Are you sure we should go in there?"
"What's the matter, Little Sam?" Maeve teases, "Are you afraid a clown will jump out at you once we're inside?"
As Dean seems to choke with laughter at this reference, happy to know that even Maeve is aware of this odd phobia, Sam clenches his jaw in concern. Taking his strange reaction seriously and wanting to reassure him as much as possible, Maeve presses her fingers against Sam's wrist. This prompts him to turn toward her and attempt a smile. Maeve looks at him tenderly.
"It'll be fine," she says. "I think we should go in and see what we can find. And don't worry: nothing can happen to me. Remember?"
Even though it might not work, Maeve's words manage to reassure Sam, who finally relaxes, shaking his head from side to side. "Of course, everything will be fine," he tells himself. "Maeve will be okay." Sam doesn't even know why he reacts this way. So he smiles at Maeve as much as at his brother and finally steps into the large, abandoned building Bobby indicated.
The building is quiet, silent, and very dark. Dean takes the lead, closely followed by Maeve, with Sam bringing up the rear, glancing around him. Over time, Sam and Dean learn to communicate silently in moments like this. And at that moment, they think the same thing: what could Bobby have sent them to find here?
If only they had taken Sam's concerns seriously.
In less time than it takes to say it, the three friends find themselves surrounded by a good thirty demons. To be honest, Sam and Dean have never seen so many in one place. Looking around, the first instinct of the two boys is to position themselves on either side of Maeve, who appears frozen in place at the sight of so many creatures with black eyes. Louis's face looms in her mind, and she becomes completely paralyzed.
"Hello, Winchester," one of them says with a smile. "I'm Davos; nice to meet you."
"What do you want, jerk?" Dean asks, his brow furrowed. "A ticket for the next express train to Hell?"
"Very funny. No, actually, I'm here to collect what my master asked for," Davos replies, pointing his chin forward.
Seeing the demon gesture toward Maeve, Sam stiffens and pulls out his demon knife from his pocket, ready to use it. He looks at Dean, who nods, and they both begin to fight against the thirty demons surrounding them. They manage to take out a few, but the demons are too numerous. After fighting valiantly as best they can, Sam and Dean still end up in the grips of two completely insane-looking demons, leaving Maeve at the center of a circle of several dozen enemies.
"So, Maeve," Davos resumes, "are you coming with me, yes or no?"
"Let them go," she says through clenched teeth.
"If you come with us," the demon continues, "my two colleagues will let your friends go. So, what do you say?"
"We're going to kill them," one of the demons with wild eyes repeats. "We're going to kill them."
"Hey..."
Davos turns to the crazy demon, who is holding Sam hostage with a huge knife. Sam remains steadfast, his gaze hard and determined. He looks Maeve in the eyes, offering her the little softness he can muster in this event.
"Don't let them do this," he tells her, smiling. "You can get out of this."
"SHUT UP!"
"Hey, take it easy!"
But it's too late. Seized by a burst of madness, with eyes blackened by his demonic essence, the demon holding Sam pulls back a few inches.
Everything happens very quickly, yet seems to occur in slow motion. When he sees the demon's knife approaching his little brother's stomach, Dean lets out a scream so heartbreaking it shakes the walls. Despite Davos telling the demon to stop, he doesn't listen and continues to bring the knife closer to Sam's body. One second, then a second more. And it's over. The demon's knife plunges into Sam's heart, and he loses his balance, ending up sprawled on the ground with half-closed eyes. When Maeve sees Sam fall and lose consciousness, she understands.
Sam Winchester is dead.
Faced with this macabre sight, Maeve drops to her knees. When she touches the ground, her face void of all emotion, staring straight ahead, the half-angel creates an exceptional resonance that kills, in a tenth of a second, the thirty demons present in the warehouse. The next second, they are all gone.
Dean, now freed, rushes to his little brother, his cheeks soaked with tears. He kneels beside him, cradling his head in his lap to show he is there. But Sam is already gone.
"Sammy..." Dean weeps. "Please, no... Sammy!!"
Slowly, Maeve gets back up. Dean doesn't take his eyes off his brother, but he senses his friend approaching the Winchester brothers. The young woman moves until she sits right next to Sam. Dean finally looks at her, his face helpless. He watches Maeve bring her hands to the gaping wound near his brother's heart, closes her eyes for a moment, and sees a brilliant light emanating from her hands. Dean struggles to believe it. He was dead. But the next second, he is no longer.
In a start, Sam opens his eyes. He finds himself sitting, facing Maeve, who is kneeling at his height. He quickly glances at Dean and sees his eyes misty, then looks back at Maeve.
"What happened?"
Maeve doesn't have the words to describe it. So instead, she takes Sam Winchester's face in her hands and brings it to her lips, giving him the sweetest, tenderest kiss of all.
