There was a sweet softness to the way they moved around each other for the next few weeks, her confession sitting between them but not like an elephant even though he hadn't said it back. It just felt like the natural progression in what was happening and, surprisingly, it didn't make anything weird. In fact, it felt like they were in a good place, comfortable with how often they were seeing each other and how they were balancing his high-stress lifestyle and her family commitments.
But still, she needed to talk it through with someone and there was only one person she could since no-one else knew.
"Ah, so you're actually still alive," Mae answered, not greeting Kat with a hello at all and she rolled her eyes. They had been texting back and forth like always but had never been long chats on the phone kind of friends, prefering to catch up in person or send each other texts at random times. It was just that meeting up with Yoongi had trumped most of the times they would normally hang and she had a feeling that was about to be pointed out to her.
"We saw each other a few weeks ago Mae," Kat replied, sinking back into the corner of the couch and fiddling with the edge of it. She was seeing Yoongi later that night after a few days of not being able to and she was itching to see him again after a few busy days. It felt like a long time.
"Yes and unless you're ringing to talk about what has been keeping you from hanging out with me more, I'm just going to start guessing. Although, I have a strong suspicion."
"Oh, you do," Kat said, used to her friends' theatricals. Jess and Mae were like two peas in a pod and sometimes she looked at her daughter, shivering as she thought about what she might be like in a few decades time although truthfully she loved them both.
"Yes, sexy, talented, and fond of dining alone."
"If you're meaning Yoongi, just come out and say it Mae," Kat said, sighing a little. They had talked briefly about him but she had been holding back, keeping things close to her chest. But it was all too much now and she wanted to let her friend know it was getting a whole lot more serious than she had previously led her to believe.
"Oh, so we're talking about Mr Sexy now?"
"We're not calling him that. Yoongi is fine."
"I am definitely not on a first name basis with Min Yoongi," Mae said, "but if he has any single friends who are also into older women then pass my number on."
"I'm not sure any of his friends are ready for you Mae," Kat said, "And I'm not sure he is ready for me actually."
"Are you second guessing the, well, whatever you want to call what you have with him?'
"I'm in love with him," Kat said firmly, the first time she'd voiced it to anyone but Yoongi and it still felt scary to admit to it.
"Well fuck," Mae said and Kat grinned. She definitely felt that word.
"Yeah, pretty much."
"So, it's getting pretty serious then. Does he know how you feel?"
"I told him a few weeks ago, completely without expecting anything back from him."
"And has that been OK? I'm assuming since you didn't say, that he hasn't reciprocated."
"He hasn't but it felt right and things have been," and she paused, thinking of the right words. "Softer, sweeter maybe? We're closer, I think, and he looks at me like he wants to say it. I can imagine it's scary given his life or maybe he doesn't feel the same way and I'm just reading too much into it all."
"Katarina, you know what you have with him and if you feel like it's something strong enough to tell him you love him then you need to back yourself. You're a very smart woman, you know how he feels."
