Peter Sam is a cheerful engine who is happy to do any work. Sometimes, though, he misses working on his old railway: the Mid Sodor Railway.

One night, Peter Sam puffed into the sheds. All the other engines started whispering and giggling when they saw him.

"What’s the joke?" asked a puzzled Peter Sam.

"Peter Sam!" exclaimed Skarloey, "Sir Topham Hatt was just here. He wanted to speak to you but you were still working."

"Speak to me? About what?"

"The Mid Sodor Railway might be reopening!"

The next morning, Peter Sam found the Fat Controller and asked a million questions at once!

"Slow down there, Peter Sam!" laughed the Fat Controller, "Yes, a preservation society is looking to reopen the railway. They want an engine to run demonstration trains and I thought_"

Before the Fat Controller could even finish, Peter Sam burst into a one-engine chorus of whistles and cheers!

"That'll be the best day ever!"

Days later, when Peter Sam was finally back at his old railway, he couldn't believe it. Every hill and every tree was just as he remembered it. Every run-down old building carried memories of all his old passengers and all his lifelong friends. The track was the only thing that was different. It gleamed in the forest of mould and rust.

"Alright, Peter Sam," said a volunteer, "there are some coaches over there and we passengers are over here. Let's get cracking!"

Once the coaches were ready, the passengers got on board. Peter Sam waited impatiently for the guard's whistle. The second it sounded, he rattled away!

"Calm down," said his driver, "the demonstration won't go well if you derail. You want this railway to reopen, don't you?"

Peter Sam tried to be more careful. He took in the sight of the trees and the flowers as he rolled along.

Suddenly, he asked his driver and fireman, "If the railway does reopen, will I be moved here?"

"I don't know," they both said in unison.

By now, they were starting to climb a hill. Everyone stopped talking to admire the view.

Peter Sam looked out over the countryside. There were fields and forests as far as the eye could see. There were no people and no engines.

Nothing was waiting at the top of the hill. There were just more rails stretching out ahead.

"It's very quiet," wheeshed Peter Sam.

As he rounded the next bend, the track became bumpy. It didn't look very new.

"Be careful," said the fireman.

"I am being_"

Peter Sam hit a big bump in the track! He came off the rails and slid off to one side. He dangled on the hillside.

The guard wandered off to fetch help. Everyone got out of the coaches. The driver and fireman carefully clambered out of Peter Sam's cab and made their way onto flatter ground. Peter Sam could do nothing.

When a tow truck finally came, everyone cheered. Peter Sam was glad when he was finally back on the rails.

"I think," said his driver, "that that's enough excitement for one day."

Everyone agreed and Peter Sam began to take the train back along the line to where they had started.

When they finally saw him puffing back towards the sheds, all the other narrow gauge engines cheered for Peter Sam.

"Did the demonstration go well?" asked Rusty.

"Do ya think the railway is gonna reopen?" asked Duncan.

"Well," sighed Peter Sam, "I don't think so."

Everyone was disappointed. They all had so many more questions and so many opinions!

Peter Sam was worn out from his long day. However, if there was one sound he didn't mind keeping him up, it was the sound of his friends talking to him about the day's adventures.
