I got home at 5:30 AM after driving around for what felt like forever, trying to find mango ice cream. No luck. I ended up buying one with no flavor listed on the tub, but it had a yellow-orange shade. I figured that would have to do.

When I brought it back to Asha, she ate it without a fuss and went straight to bed.

She has a full day of classes today, and I'm just praying she gets through it—for her sake, the baby's sake, and everyone else's.

I decided to crawl back into bed myself, hoping to get at least two more hours of sleep. Both of our days start at nine, and with Kingston traffic, especially on a Friday morning, we might both end up being late. But I guess this is just life as parents now.

At 7 AM, my alarm went off, pulling me out of my restless sleep. I got up and started getting ready for the day. Once I was almost finished, I made my way to Asha's room to check if she was up.

She was sitting on the edge of her bed, staring off into space.

Chauvanie: "Asha Gaye?"

Asha: "Yes," she answered, barely looking my way.

Chauvanie: "Uh, you alright?"

stupid question but still

Asha: "Yeah."

Chauvanie: "You sure?" I asked, sitting beside her on the bed.

Asha: "Just pregnant, I guess," she shrugged.

Chauvanie: "Yaa guh school today?" I asked, already knowing the answer.

Asha: "Have to. Full day. Nah wear this," she said, tossing a dress that was on the bed into one corner. "Me can have one of your shirts, please?"

Chauvanie: "Sure," I replied, not protesting,

When I returned with the shirt, she had already put on a bra and some biker shorts.

Asha: "Me think me breasts only start getting bigger when dem start producing milk," she said, readjusting herself in the bra.

Chauvanie: "You inna your second trimester, so I guess that's possible."

Asha: "Can drive me? Me nuh feel like driving today," she said, pulling on the shirt I brought her, which swallowed her petite frame.

Chauvanie: "Alright, we can buy it before me drop you off."

We left soon after.

I finally pulled into the station's parking lot, exhaustion settling heavily on my shoulders. I stifled a yawn, reminding myself of the assignments waiting for me. Hustling into the building, I tried to ignore the way my eyelids felt like lead.
