Alastor was wiping the blood from his monocle when she appeared, disrupting his peace. The body in front of him was unrecognizable as the overlord it once belonged to, shredded to pieces as it was. The screams he had wrung from the overlord had been absolutely delectable. Alastor was nearly high from the new power he had gained from taking his souls.

"Well done," Lilith congratulated him. "You have exceeded my expectations time and time again and completed every assignment I've given you with ease."

"I humbly accept your praise, Majesty," Alastor drawled. "You are quite adept at supplying me with the exact information I require to target their weaknesses. At a certain point, it becomes child's play. I'd rather enjoy a challenge, if I could be so bold."

Lilith smiled. "For other demons, these would be challenges. Hopefully you can be satisfied with the power you have accrued. And the knowledge that Hell is a much better place without those overlords in positions of power."

"As much as I love a good pat on the back, I must ask why you've truly come to my tower, Majesty. Come to call in your favor at last?"

"Not today, Radio Demon. You are free to do as you wish for now."

"Anticipation can be sweet, my Queen, but only to a point. Surely you can divulge some of your plans concerning me. You know that I could not share your secrets even if I wanted to," Alastor pushed.

Lilith simply chuckled. "All in good time, Alastor." After a brief pause, she continued, "I am curious about something, however. This so-called television demon, Vox. I cannot fathom why you would assist another overlord's rise to power. You are only creating your own future adversaries."

"Vox is simply an experiment," Alastor hedged. "A fun diversion. He is harmless, I assure you."

Lilith summoned the onyx chains around his throat and pulled them taught, forcing him to bow. "You lie. There is more to it than that, and we both know it. You are taking unnecessary risks. I will go against my better judgement and trust your assessment of the situation for now, but do not let your relationship with this demon interfere with your work. Your allegiance is to me above all else. Am I understood?"

"Of course, my Queen," Alastor replied through gritted teeth.

"Good. Now, I must be on my way. I suggest you heed my warning Alastor, for I will only give it once." With that, Lilith opened a glowing purple portal, disappearing through it. The chains melted away as the portal closed.

There had to be a way out of this deal. And Alastor was going to find it.

Alastor awoke slowly, his face buried in his pillow. Wait, no — that was hair. Long, black hair. He became aware of his body at the same time he became aware of Violet's, pressed up against him. His arm was still wrapped around her abdomen, holding her close to him. He fought the instinct to push her away. It was a reflexive one, leftover from a lifetime or two of avoiding intimate contact like the plague. If he admitted it to himself, he rather liked the feeling of her.

A glance at the grandfather clock told him he had slept in rather late. It was far past time to get up and greet the day. Alastor attempted to extricate himself from around Violet without waking her, but quickly failed. She turned onto her back, rubbing her eyes and yawning before setting her gaze on him. A small smile touched her lips, and Alastor's own smile softened a bit in response. He reached for her chin, tilting her head up slightly to inspect her neck. Good — the bruises were gone. If they had been deep enough to last till morning, Alastor was going track those demons down and shred them apart, message to Valentino be damned.
